Yamba Men’s Bowls Pennants

Last Saturday, the Yamba Grade 3 side suffered a debilitating defeat against Grafton in the penultimate round of competition which has rocked their quest to capture the District title. The Yamba side was defeated 70 – 46 for a comprehensive (10 points to 0) loss. The Grade 3 side must now win their final game against Maclean, at home, by a considerable margin if they are to assured of advancing to this year’s Zone One play-offs. The Grade 4 side accompanied their Grade 3 colleagues to Grafton on Saturday and provided a reason for celebration confirming their continued improvement with a narrow but significant 67 – 63 (8.5 points to 1.5) victory over their adversaries. Their final game will be against South Ex-services and another good result may, depending upon other results, place them in the mix for a District title. The Grade 5 side suffered another loss, this time at the hands of Iluka, 70 – 48 (10 points to 0). This side does not lack effort or endeavour but has consistently found ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory throughout the season. Next round against Grafton may possibly provide the highlight of the season for this band of bowlers. In the Grade 6 local derby between the Yamba Gold and Blue sides, it was again the Gold combination that managed to claim boasting rights with a 72 – 49 (9.5 points to 0.5) win. The Grade 7 side found their Maclean opposition just a little too good losing 63 – 53 (8.5 points to 1.5) after putting up a commendable effort throughout the contest. Next week only Grades 6 and 7 will be contesting Pennants with the remaining grades having a break over the Anzac Day long weekend. The Grade 6 (Gold) will host Maclean and the Grade 6 (Blue) will also play at home against South Ex-Services. Grade 7 will take the trip to Iluka. Please check the board for selections. The next full round of competition is on Saturday April 30. The quarter-finals of the 2016 Major Singles Championship were contested last Sunday however at the time of submission no results were available. The semi-finals are programmed to be contested on Sunday May 1, commencing at 1pm. The nomination sheets for the club’s Mixed Pairs, Major/Minor Pairs and Minor Triples Championships are on the noticeboard. Please check the board for closing and competition dates. On Saturday April 23 the club will host a visit by Southport for an afternoon of mixed triples commencing at 1pm. The participation sheet is on the noticeboard with names required to be submitted by 11.30am on the day. Social bowls continues with pairs on Wednesday and triples on Friday. All games commence at 1pm and names need to be on the respective nomination sheets by 11.30am on the day of play. All nominations are guaranteed a game and visitors are most welcomed.
