‘Purple Friday’ – an initiative started by Ballina on Richmond Rotary Club – involves as many as possible businesses (and other interested individuals) wearing specially printed purple tee shirts every Friday. Printed in bold colorful letters on the shirts are the words.
‘Together We Say No To Domestic and Family Violence
Yes to Respectful Relationships’
All Rotary clubs in Zone 8 – Australia, New Zealand and the South West Pacific Islands are supporting this campaign.
Iluka Woombah Rotary is heartened to have the proactive involvement of organisations such as our major sponsor, Club Iluka. They are our first Purple Friday participants! So far this year more than 30 women have lost their lives to Domestic and Family Violence.
More than one daughter, mother, sister, partner or friend a week!
Our region has the 3rd highest level of reported DFV in the state!
Collaborative efforts such as the Purple Friday Project are instrumental in amplifying the message of prevention, support, and advocacy for those affected by domestic violence. ‘Purple Friday’ serves not only as a visible symbol of solidarity but also as a platform for education and outreach within the community.
By engaging multiple stakeholders, including service clubs, businesses, and community organisations, the initiative can reach a broader audience and foster a culture of zero tolerance towards DFV. It also underscores the importance of community cohesion in addressing social issues and promoting collective action for positive change.
The support of major sponsors, local chambers of commerce and individuals further demonstrates the commitment of the community to prioritise the well-being and safety of its members. Hopefully, initiatives like ‘Purple Friday’ will continue to grow in impact and inspire similar efforts in other communities, ultimately contributing to the eradication of all types of domestic and family violence.
