Yamba Major Singles Championship

The second round of the 2016 Major Singles Championship was contested last Sunday with eight games being played under almost perfect conditions. Steve Kliendienst made quick work of Carl Stewart and booked a placed in next week’s quarter-finals with a dominant 31 – 4 victory. Also through to the quarter-finals is Mark Scobie following his win over Allan Parker (31 – 15); Peter Forrester had a battle against Bob Ballantyne before advancing (31 – 22); Greg Dickman overcame Tom Morrow in a close match with Greg taking full advantage of his drawing ability (31 – 24); Graham Meany defeated the determined Neil McKenzie (31 – 20); Trevor Bardsley was too consistent for Wayne Curtis particularly dominating the second half of the contest (31 – 17); and John Luchetti was in sparkling form to defeat the ‘never say die’ Bruce Angel (31 – 23). However, in the match of the day, between Brad Johnson and Ray Schafer, it took 34 ends of high quality and thoroughly entertaining lawn bowls before Brad could secure a win eventually overcoming the tenacious Ray Schafer 31 – 29. The quarter-finals are scheduled for next Sunday with competition to commence at 1pm with Mark Scobie pitted against Peter Forrester; Greg Dickman scheduled to battle Steve Kliendienst; Graham Meany and Trevor Bardsley locking horns; and Brad Johnson up against John Luchetti. In Pennants, the Grade 3 side had to fight hard to defeat South Grafton 66 – 56 (nine to one); Grade 4 provided the drama for the day with scores level on the master scoreboard in their match against Iluka 48 shots each, however the Yamba combinations took the narrowest of wins (5.5 points to 4.5 points) on the back of two rink wins; Grade 5 again struggled and were defeated by Maclean 68 – 41; Grade Six (Gold) found the conditions at Wooli totally alien with Wooli taking full advantage of their home conditions defeating the Yamba team on the slow patched surface 65 – 41; Grade 6 (Blue) were never in the chase against Maclean losing 86 – 33; and the Grade 7 boys were defeated by Brooms Head 63 – 42. Next week Grade 3 take on Grafton at Grafton and will be accompanied by the Grade 4 squad; Grade 5 will journey to Iluka; the battle of the ‘sixes’ will take place at home with the Yamba (Gold) hosting Yamba (blue) in the final derby of the year; and Grade 7 will host Maclean. Please check the pennant board for selections and details. Social bowls continues with pairs on Wednesday and triples on Friday.
