Maclean Bowling Club held their annual XXXX Gold Classic 2 Bowl Triples on Saturday 21st November, with 24 teams competing. Apart from local Club entries there were teams from Iluka, Yamba Grafton, Brooms Head and Bellingen as well as several composite teams involving other clubs.
After a welcome from Bowls Co-ordinator Jeff Newman, play commenced in ideal conditions with two games being played before a smorgasbords lunch.
Round 1 saw several big wins with Steve Alford’s team leading. As the weather got warmer so did the quality of the bowls with a number of close games in Round 2. However, there were a couple of big wins recorded by Graeme Meany’s and Jim Shannon’s teams, respectively. At this stage there were 7 teams in contention, with the results of the last game would deciding the overall place getters.
Round 3 started in blustery conditions which helped keep the temperature comfortable. These conditions proved to be the undoing for a couple of favoured teams who fell by the wayside. This together with a number of upsets saw Peter Forrester’s composite team emerge as the winners with another composite team skipped by Mark Bayliss taking second prize.
Peter Forrester, in his acceptance speech, thanked the sponsors XXXX Gold and the Maclean Bowling Club for staging the event as well as the organizing officials, umpire, bar and restaurant staff. He hoped that the Club saw the event as being successful and that together with the sponsors would conduct the event again next year.
