Helen Hopwood was the star of last Wednesday’s monthly medal event when she played a lovely consistent game to come in as the day’s overall winner with a great score of 68 nett. Helen was thrilled to not only take the Div 3 medal but also the fantastic prize donated by Tania Clark of Allure Derma Cosmetic Skin Clinic. No doubt Helen will be looking extra radiant and fabulous in the coming weeks. Helen remarked that she kept herself focussed for her whole round which, together with only 27 putts, contributed to her success. The evergreen Jeannie Dahl was the medal winner in Div 1 with a very fine 70 nett, which equated to only 88 hits for Jean. She was also the recipient of the O.B.E. award for the day. Carlie McKenzie played more akin to her A Grade ability, with par after par, when she took the medal in Div 2 with 71 nett. Carlie, despite a few unfortunate dropped shots, was also the gross winner with 93 and won the putting in her division with only 26 putts. She was also the NTP winner on the Henwood’s Hot Bread Shop sponsored 1st hole with a great shot pin high. Jen Townsend was the gross winner in Div 1 with 86 and Jean Milne with 99 took the gross in Div 3 as well as receiving the nett win in that division with a wonderful 69.
Runners up on the day were Marianne Mannell 72 on a c/b from Jan Patterson in Div 1. Beryl Wilks 72 on a c/b from Heather Miller (birthday girl) in Div 2 and Eve Macpherson 70 from Gail Knell 71 in Div 3. Jan Patterson was the winner of the putting in Div 1 with 31 putts on a c/b. Jan is having a sweet return to her golf after an absence of sometime and is once again a regular competitor in our fields. Her good form resulted in her winning the Clarence Coast Blinds Monthly Aggregate for July. Wednesday was also our ladies’ day in support of Legacy. We were delighted to welcome Bob McFarlane and Denise Comerford to our presentation where we presented to them a cheque for $100 from the proceeds of our raffle on the day. We are pleased to be able to continue to support Legacy in their important and valued role in our community.
Friday’s Stableford event attracted a great field of 43 starters. The scores were once again reflective of the return to a fair amount of run on our course with the dry winter conditions. Gillian McLachlan and Noeline Smith returned the best scores in Div 1 with 38pts each. Gillian took the win following the c/b. Jan Patterson continued her good form to come in 3rd placed with 35pts. Robyn Wilkes found her lost mojo and returned to the winners circle with vengeance claiming Div 2 with a magical 43pts. Sandra Gleeson was r/up on 36 followed by Beryl Wilks on 35. Lyn Hatton also had a great round to come in first placed in Div 3 with 40pts. Fay Shields was the r/up on 36 followed by Sally Beresford on 35. The Stableford event on Saturday saw 10 ladies entered into the competition on a very chilly morning with the mercury showing only one degree. Marg Hopkins was the winner on 36pts with Jean Dahl continuing her form for the week to come in as the r/up on 34pts.
Balls were awarded to Narelle Butcher and Peg James. The NTP on the 1st was won by Narelle. Round 2 of the Weekend Singles Match Play Championship was also held last Saturday. Having her first experience at match play, Shirley Goodger is not in the least bothered with the different rules and regulations of match play and is going with the flow of it all. Following her good win the previous week, she continued her rampage by defeating Kate Thomson 6/5. In the other match Janette Blair defeated Chrissy Danvers 3/1.
The final will be held next Saturday with Shirley up against Janette in what should be a great match. Good luck to both players. Julie White
