Sweet success for Dean’s Chocolates

Sunshine Sugar has sponsored artisan chocolatier Dean Agic of Lawrence, to showcase the area’s sugar industry, through his mouth watering chocolate delights. Dean said that Sunshine Sugar approached him, to represent them at the Ballina Food and Wine Fair, which was held at the Ballina Jockey Club on Sunday. “They were looking for someone who had their sugar in their products and a product that they could showcase through,” Dean said. Sunshine Sugar is a proud local industry which is always keen to support other local businesses and community groups, wherever possible. CEO of Sunshine Sugar, Mr Chris Connors said that when they were approached with a request for sponsorship support of this years’ Ballina Food and Wine Festival, they were keen to get on board, but wanted to do something interactive and hands-on. “When we learned of Dean Agic and his artisan chocolates, we thought this could be a good pairing,” Mr Connors said. “There is no greater test of how good a product is than in the tasting, and what a great way to showcase our sugar.” Sunshine Sugar supplied Dean with a range of locally grown and produced products that he used to prepare a number of bespoke chocolates for this weekend’s Festival – blending not just sugar, but also molasses, treacles and even some cane spirit (white rum). Dean said that he made a range of customised products for them, just for the weekends fair. “I candied a whole lot of orange and lime peel for different flavoured truffles. There was a Pina Colada which had a pure cane spirit, pineapple, coconut and white chocolate in it. “I used candied orange peel for a chilli, cinnamon, nutmeg and orange truffle and also an orange and poppy seed truffle. There was also a range of a molasses, gnash, a golden syrup gnash and a treacle gnash, which were served in some little gnash cups. “I had a range of about 40 different flavours of truffles and different styles of chocolates that I made.” Dean said that he was very proud and quite honoured to be asked (to promote this local industry). “I really enjoyed the experience of showcasing Sunshine Sugar in my products,” he said.
