Probus Month BBQ and get together

Probus Month was recently celebrated by a combined Clarence group of clubs, when Grafton hosted Maclean and Yamba Clubs at a barbeque lunch in See Park.

The jacarandas were in full bloom for the event and despite the very warm day, all attendees enjoyed meeting new friends as well as the two-course lunch hosted by the home club.

Two of the groups within our club are going from strength. The ‘Cards’ group now meets weekly at the GDSC and the ‘Green Thumbs’ have reached the stage where they need to publish their own newsletter. South Grafton Services Club was the venue for lawn bowls at our game’s afternoon. Thank you to the bowlers who joined in to coach our beginners on a hot but very enjoyable afternoon.

Mayor Peter Johnstone was the guest speaker for our November meeting at the GDSC. Peter spoke about his vision for his term in office and surprised many members by mentioning that Grafton is no longer a city but is now a regional centre. He reminded the group that there will be council elections next year. In response to questions, Peter outlined the plans for the new aquatic centre and revealed the plan for metal to be used in the construction of the pool. He also spoke of the problems in regaining an air service for the valley.

This week we are travelling to Guyra for a tour of the tomato venture and finishing the month with ten pin bowling.

Probus is a club for retirees who are seeking fellowship and fun. We have grown to a club of 90 members. Membership enquiries can be made to Rita Johnson (0458 473 156) or Paula Payne (0439 325 856).
