It is great that I get to start this week with some good news. The Presidents Reserve Singles final was played at the GDSC on Saturday between reigning Champion Steve Colley and our own Greg “Squizzy” Taylor. Squizzy got off to a good start leading 10 to 2 early before Sparrow showed why he is a champion, closing the gap to two mid way through the match. This seemed to spur Squizzy on and he ran away to win the match 31 – 11 which by no means indicated the closeness of the contest. Both men played some great bowls but, on behalf of myself and the rest of the GDSC, a massive congratulations to Squizzy for winning this year’s Reserve Singles.
There were a number of Club singles games played over the weekend as well. In the first game G Maxted fought off a determined D Barker by playing the perfect weighted shot on the last end, winning 31 – 27, whilst in the second game K Evans showed his class by defeating L Basset 31 – 23. The third game saw T Dalton and J Ryan play another great game, with Tony winning 31 – 28, the fourth game had M Walsh and R Marchant playing some great bowls before M Walsh won 31 – 22. In the last game on Saturday, G Harrison ran away from P Cubbin to win 31 – 13. Sunday morning saw G Taylor back up to defeat N Henwood in an entertaining game of bowls 31 – 25.
The Club fours was played on Sunday morning but to keep it suspenseful, I will report more on that next week.
Tuesday night TNT bowls had the 3rd week completed and it is still tight at the top, with ‘Humble Pyes’ leading with 17 points, followed closely by ‘Ken’s’ on 16 and woodies on 14 points. The nights winners were ‘Clacka 2’, with runners up going to ‘Accessible’ and ‘Misfits’ getting the lucky losers award.
The Clarence Valley Wholesalers resting toucher on green 1 was won by L Bennett at 20:18, whilst on green 2 the Abbey Motor Inn resting toucher was won by W Tozer at 19:21. Many thanks again to our sponsors the GDSC, Clarence Valley Wholesaler, McKim’s Real Estate, Abbey Motor Inn and Mid City Apartments.
Remember that Wednesday and Friday bowls are back in the afternoons now, so come and get your name down for a game here at the GDSC.
Good luck to our bowlers who are competing in the District Triples this weekend.
