Jamie Pengilly wins Midweek Stableford

  Despite the threat of rain a good field of 125 golfers took part in the midweek Stableford and there were some remarkable scores returned. In A Grade Jamie Pengilly came in late to take the lead with a fine round of 42 points. Left floundering in his wake were David Bruton (41) and Terrance Crowe (38). Al Burke held off Peter Hall in a countback with 41 points to take the AR voucher. Jim Cope was third with a steady round of 40 points. In B Grade Tom Moore was the winner with 38 points (still lost the match for the Keno) with Guy Carpenter (37) and Max Sweetman (36) in the minor placings. John Lloyd won C Grade with a sterling round of 39 points from Michael Killen and Ross Wilson on 37. NTP winners were: 3rd Al Burke 21cm, 9th Chris Bonner 260cm, 10th Robb Robertson 290cm, 12th Russell Cain 62cm and 17th Jim Cope 91cm. A big Saturday for Kevin Shanahan There were 140 golfers who competed in Saturday’s Stableford event and, despite some warm sunshine, the wind played havoc with most scores. Kevin Shanahan recorded the day’s best result to win A Grade with 40 points, followed by David McGregor (38) and Paul Tarasenko (37). AR grade was won by the first player to tee off, Doug Luckie, with 37 points from Alan Warry and Richard Beresford with 35 points each. It was left hander’s day in B Grade when Kevin Molloy showed the way with 39 to leave Thomas Golder (38) and Peter Auliff (36) to share the other places. Don O’Brien took out C Grade with 35 points from Col Ayton and Peter Sweetman both recorded 34. NTP winners were 3rd David Bruton 320cm, 9th Graham Edwards 310cm, 10th Graham Edwards (again) 330cm. 12th Alex Podbereski 120cm, 17th John Maguire 74cm and 2nd shot to 17 Laurie Arnott 370cm. Sponsors were John Wright, Peter Campbell Physio, SeaFire Steak & Seafood and Beach Scene. A lowly 32 points with 21 on the back nine won golf balls in the rundown. Governor’s Cup attracts big field The annual Governor’s Cup attracted a really good field to compete for this prestigious trophy. The result was extremely close and Margaret Solomon, Yins Wong, Ron Jeffrey and Jim Kelly scored five under 67 or 55.875 nett and were the winners. In close pursuit were Kim Lipscombe, Lorraine and Doug Luckie and David Bruton 56. Darie Nightingale, Michael Shirlow, Krystyna and Peter Korju were in third place. Ball winners scored 59.125 or better. Cystic Fibrosis Charity Day Sunday 31st July is the annual Cystic Fibrosis Coast to Course Charity Day at Yamba Golf Club. There is a walk from Brooms Head to Yamba Golf Course or a shorter walk to and from Green Point. Also, golfers can play a 4 person Ambrose instead of walking. All funds raised go to this very important cause. Those wishing to play golf should ring the Pro Shop to book in. At the conclusion of the walk and golf there will be a BBQ available as well as raffles etc. More details from the club office. David Miles
