Congratulations to all our Grafton ladies, together with our visitors, who participated in last week’s Women’s Golf Northern Rivers Tournament. We were blessed with three days of brilliant winter sunshine which contributed to a successful Tournament. There were many Grafton champions both on and off the course throughout the lead up to and during the Tournament. On course Grafton champions included Marilyn Powell who was the winner of the Irene Fuller Salver, Division 3 – 36 holes WGNR Closed Championship. Marilyn backed up this win on the Wednesday when she combined with Millie Harris to win the WGNR Open Foursomes Nett Championship for the Beryl Harris Trophy. The mother and daughter team of Jean Dahl and Sue Reguson were the winners of the WGNR Open Foursomes Gross Championship and were awarded the Silver Tray. There were a few ladies who celebrated multiple wins during the Tournament including Marilyn, Janette Blair (Div 1 Day 2 18-hole Gross winner and r/up with Jen Townsend Open Foursomes Div 1 18-hole Gross); Sonya Baker (Div 2 36-hole Nett winner and Open Foursomes Div 1 18-hole Nett winner with Marianne Mannell); Julie White (Div 2 Day 2 18-hole Nett winner and r/up with Kerry Harding Open Foursomes Div 2 18-hole Gross); and Kerry Harding (WGNR Div 3 Closed Championship 36-hole Gross R/up). Special congratulations also to Heather Purtill who had a fantastic two days when she fired a brilliant 37 hits on the back nine on day 2 to charge home to finish the 36-hole Championship with 171, which was one shot behind the winner of the Women’s Open Northern Cup, Sherree Forsythe of Maclean on 170. Heather was awarded WGNR Div 1 Open Championship 36-hole Gross. Special thanks are extended to our Secretary Lyn, Treasurer Marilyn, Captain Noeline and President Heather for their enormous efforts in ensuring all would be “right” for the Tournament. Our house chairwoman, Jen, together with her band of dedicated, supportive helpers, including our flower power girls, carried out their many tasks with the utmost attention to detail, which was appreciated by all. We thank Bobby Smith, our gourmet barbeque chef. A highlight of the Tuesday presentation evening was the unexpected delight to have the special guest, Michele Adair of Golf New South Wales, invited to address the audience. President of Women’s Golf Northern Rivers, Robyn Trotter, was thankful and praised all involved in the successful staging of the Tournament, including her own Committee and the Grafton Ladies Committee. Fifteen ladies backed up on the Wednesday night to attend a rules seminar hosted by Golf New South Wales. Normal competition resumed last Friday with a Stableford event with a field of 26 starters.
