Hooked on their craft

Clarence Valley residents who are interested in learning to crochet and refine their skills in the craft are invited to join weekly beginner’s classes in Maclean.

Organised by Major Cathryn Williamson from the Salvation Army in Grafton, the four-week program provides participants with an insightful and encouraging guide to crocheting.

“We sell a lot of crochet items through our family store in Maclean, and lots of customers comment on them, and they say ‘oh, I wish I could crochet’, and the idea of hosting beginners classes grew from there,” she explained.

“We put a call out on Facebook, asking people if they might be interested and what days and times best suited them, and it’s grown from there.

“We’re currently running a four-week course which teaches the basics of crochet, and we’re planning to host more classes for anyone else who is interested in learning how to crochet later this month from September 26, and again from October 24.

“Everyone who comes along for the classes is given a guide to crocheting, they’re taught the correct wording because the UK and the US terminology is different, and shown how to use crochet hooks properly, and once the classes are finished, they’ll all have a new dishcloth they’ll have made which they get to take home with them.

“Mark (my husband) came along to the first class we held last week to help people, and everyone said how much they enjoyed themselves.

“They all did so well.

“We’re looking forward to hosting more beginners’ classes, and anyone of any age is welcome to come along.

“Children are also welcome with parental supervision.

“You don’t have to be a beginner; the classes are open to anyone who wants to crochet and enhance their skills.

“We’re just inviting people to come along and have some fun crocheting with us.”

Beginners crochet classes are held each Tuesday between 6-8pm at the Salvation Army Hall, located at 257 River Street Maclean, opposite the Post Office.

Cost is $20 per person.

Participants are supplied with yarn, a crochet hook, and cards which explain the terminology of the craft.

Anyone interested in joining one of the upcoming beginners classes is invited to contact Major Williamson at maclean.admin@salvationarmy.org.au, or visit the Salvation Army Family Store at 267 River Street, Maclean, between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.
