Our 2016 Weekend Championships got off to a rather unusual start last Saturday. With the first round commencing bright and early on the 10th tee, most players felt an urge to give up following the disappointing very high scores on their first hole, a par three. One A Grade player obviously could not get the high scores out of her head, as she proceeded to record a massive 14 shots on the next hole, the par five 11th. With the 4th Monthly Medal and 3rd Captain’s Trophy played in conjunction on the day, Carol Toms was pleased to take the medal with a very commendable 75 nett. Peg James was the day’s winner on 74. Carol was the runner up on a c/b from Marianne Mannell. Balls were also awarded to Sonya Baker and Noeline Smith on 76. Kate Thomson was the best putter on the day with 29 on a count back. Peg is this year trying her hand in the 54-hole Weekend Championships as opposed to our 72-hole Club Championships. She held the lead overnight on 89 from Carol Toms 91 and Chrissy Danvers 96. Following a cool night, Sunday produced a dry, crisp morning which saw Peg once again came in with the best round of the day with 90 hits (nett 75) to extend her lead by five shots from Carol who posted a 93 gross on Sunday. Peg is also leading the nett on 149, three shots ahead of Carol and Chrissy on 152. Sunday’s daily event, which saw seven starters, was won by Peg with 75 on a c/b from Chrissy. Carol was the best putter in the club on the day. Congratulations to our junior player, Courtney Fuller, who finished runner up in the 16 years and over girl’s section of the Jack Newton North Coast Junior Masters event at Kew Country Club over the weekend. A small group of only five girls contested this section. Courtney finished with rounds of 84 and 77, to come in six shots behind the winner. In the overall girl’s event, Courtney placed 9th out of 15, a very commendable effort up against many City players. Last Friday saw six of our ladies’ head down river to Yamba, to participate in the resurrected PGA Women’s Holden Scramble. Peg teamed up with three of the Yamba Ladies Committee players. Janette, Chrissy and Julie included the talented Kim Wiblen of Maclean in their team. Narelle and Shirley brought the big hitting Judy Parkes of Maclean into their team and also the steady Moira Morrow of Yamba. All players thoroughly enjoyed some great golf and camaraderie on the day. Thank you to Yamba Professional, John Wright, and the Yamba Golf Club for providing such a wonderful event and great hospitality. Good luck to Sue, Kim, Lorraine and Jenny (ex Grafton girl) as they head off to Kooindah Waters on the Central Coast to participate in the Regional Final with their Pro John joining their team for that event. Wednesday of last week was a Stableford competition very generously sponsored by Sue Petty. With a field of 60 starters the overall champion player for the day, and the thrilled recipient of the lovely trophy, was Robyn Wilkes with a massive 44pts. Div 1 winner was Peg James 36 on a c/b from Noeline Smith with Mary Atkins 3rd on 35. Heather Miller on 36 was the winner of Div 2 with June Newsome r/up on 34 on a c/b from Lyn Dahl. Div 3 winner was Marilyn Powell on 41, followed by Helen Irving on 36 on a c/b from Royer Smith. Our Ladies Committee, led by President Heather and Captain Noeline, have been very busy and working hard getting preparations in place for our 53rd May Tournament. With entries expected to be on par with last year’s event and players coming from a wide area, it is hoped that we can once again produce a fantastic Tournament. Details of entrants are sketchy and were unfortunately not available to this scribe at the time of submitting this report. However, confirmation has been received that last year’s Champion, Jodie Rockliff, of Coolangatta Tweed will be returning to defend her title. Multiple winner, and 2014 Champion, Sue Reguson will also once again be coming “home” to place her stamp on this year’s Tournament. On the Wednesday of our Tournament, an afternoon tea will be provided for all players in the clubhouse after the game. It would be appreciated if all Grafton Lady Golfers could please supply a small plate of food to share at the afternoon tea. The Tournament will be held over the four days of May 25, 26, 27 and 28 and we encourage anyone with an interest in golf to come out to our course at the top of the hill in Bent Street South Grafton to witness some fantastic golf.
