With the Australia Day swim cancelled due to early pool closure, and commitments elsewhere, a pleasing amount of members fronted up last week to compete for not one, but two, of the monthly trophies that were up for grabs. President Steve welcomed two new swimmers to the fold, namely Peter Lebreton and David Hislop. Both men completed time trials during the meet, and both proved that they will offer excellent competition to some of our stronger swimmers. All finals last week had at least two of the fairer sex represented, with Jenny Vickery and Toni Ensbey qualifying for the 50m, along with Ian Goodman, Tyler Durrington and Steve Donnelly. Tyler, proving that holidays hadn’t hampered his fitness, was the first to touch in this event, closely followed by Steve and Jenny. However, the judge was not happy; all three had busted their times, so the win was awarded to Ian Goodman with Toni taking second place. The Stephen Donnelly Explosive Cup, which goes to the winner of the 30m freestyle, was the next event to be contested. Three ladies, Debbie Smith, Jill Enks and Jenny Vickery were hoping against hope that they could take out this event. They were swimming against Steve Donnelly and Tyler Durrington. With only fractions of a second separating the five contestants as they crossed the line, everyone waited with baited breath to hear the judge’s decision. A very deserving Jill Enks, who swam very close to her nominated time, was awarded the cup, with Steve second and Debbie third. Debbie Smith and Jill Enks emerged from the water and headed straight back to the starting blocks for the 30m B B & B final with the Wykes Tyrepower Cup as an enticement. Also contesting this event were Bruce Durrington, Bob Owen and Terry Barnes. Barnesy, really turning on the power, crossed the line just ahead of Durro, but once again the judge shook his head, as they both registered a two second break. Jill, coming in third, but with a time close to nominated, was awarded the cup with Bob second and Debbie third. Congratulations Jill, winner of both trophies, a feat not accomplished by many ladies. The monthly barbeque held after the swim was very well attended and thanks to Bruce for doing the cooking and to Damien and Mikayla for cleaning up afterwards. Your work is really appreciated.
