Grafton Senior Citizens – August meeting

Grafton Senior Citizens recently held their August general meeting with 68 members and apologies from 26.

Guest speaker Bob Carnaby from the Stroke Foundation spoke about symptoms and ways to help prevent stroke. Bob is a volunteer with the group, which is a charity.

Birthday wishes to those celebrating during month. Best wishes to anyone on sick list, including Mary Austin.

Sympathy to families of members Keith Rogan, Jim Jolly and Marie Barling, who recently passed away.

Welcome new members, Roslyn Glass, John Sheraton.

Correspondence in: advice from Clarence Valley Council of our grant of $1500 for 2019; account from Jockey Club for yearly rent; advice of balance from Westlawn investments; due to personal reasons, resignation from committee from Barb Sanders; advice of breast screen bus in Grafton from September for three months; thank you card from Ellen Mulherin; verbal thank you from Pam Duroux.

Correspondence out: letters to new members; get well cards and sympathy cards to members, or families. Treasurer’s report tabled and accounts for payment authorised.

General business: latest NSW & North Coast seniors papers available; latest Seniors Revolution also out; successful pie & pea day and barbecue day held. Mention made of books and diaries available at rooms. After closure of local Red Cross, seniors donated some of their surplus gear. Members invited to donate groceries for Christmas competition. 

The sing-a-long in September will not be held, but in lieu we will hold another barbecue. Tickets will go on sale at the September meeting, and be held on September 23 and include some sing-a-long music.

The bus trips to Stuarts Point and Scotts Head in May, and the mystery trip in July were both successful.

The next day trip to Yamba for a luncheon boat cruise to Harwood Bridge and return is on Friday October 18 and tickets went on sale at the meeting; the trip is already full. Names will continue to be taken with a view to a possible second trip next year. 

New members, over 50 are welcome. Enquiries or bookings on trips or special activities at meetings, or any Thursday morning at the Seniors room, Kensei Lounge, Racecourse, Powell Street or with publicity officer Sandra on 6642 7720.

Next general meeting is Tuesday September 10 from 10.30am. Matt Cameron (a vision exercise physiology) has been invited as guest speaker. Members are reminded this is a race day, so name badges must be worn, and parking will be available in the member’s car park.
