Grafton Senior Citizens

Grafton Senior Citizens recently held their June general meeting, with an attendance of 56 members, 29 apologies. Birthday wishes to those celebrating during month, and best wishes to anyone on sick list, including Elma Ward, Mary Randall, Noeline Welch. Welcome back to Irene Tranter after illness. Col Drayton, Grafton Fire Brigade station officer, spoke briefly about his background, then about fire safety in home. After 20 years in other areas, Col came to Grafton 3 years ago. Matters mentioned were danger of putting metal in microwaves, lint in clothes driers, faulty power leads, electric blankets, open fire places, electric heaters, candles, smoking in bed, filters in air conditioners. He also mentioned keys should be near door, for easy exit in event of fire, and smoke alarms are compulsory in all homes. He also recommended a fire blanket, preferably in kitchen. Meeting resumed, with welcome to following new members: Kristine McEnery, Mary Harvey, Margaret Johnson, Doreen Wilkes. General business included: successful Pie & Pea day; fund raising for local girl, Georgia McKenzie, with incurable, debilitating illness; next meeting, will start taking names for sing-along morning, Monday, September 19. New members are welcome to join group, and anyone over age 50 may apply. Enquiries can be made with members at Community Centre, Duke St, any Thursday, or come along to a meeting on 2nd Tuesday of month. Next trip, a day to Outback Spectacular on Gold Coast, for a three course lunch and show on Sunday, June 26 is currently full, but reserves will be noted. Final payments complete, and tickets paid for. A mystery trip on July 15 has over 40 booked, but still a few spare seats. The extended tour, including Thunderbolts Way, Port Stephens and Newcastle, 7 days from August 19 is already fully booked, but more reserves needed. If interested in any trips, make your bookings and payments any Thursday, at Seniors rooms, Community Centre, or with Sandra, 6642 7720. If you can’t make it then, contact organisors & special arrangements can be made. Special fund raising competition results: 1st S. Chaseling; 2nd K. Lawson; 3rd L. Purnell. Last 200 club winners: 1st B. Jukes; 2nd N. De Amyand; 3rd M. Rodgers. Regular meeting competition winners were: J. Wilson; G. Holloway; C. Hayman; G. Greenaway; L. McFarlane; R. Jackson. Next general meeting, 10.30am Tuesday, July 12 when guest speaker will be Florence Collison, to speak about brain injuries. Sandra Connelly
