Grafton lady golfers hold their AGM

The cream of the crop remained on the top following Day 3 of the Enid Dougherty Challenge which was held last Wednesday with a field of 58 starters. After going in to the final day’s American Foursomes event as the competition leaders, Norma Carter and Anna Bidstrup kept the momentum flowing. The pair was able to retain the lead and was announced as the winners with the highest point’s total. Norma and Anna were both delighted to receive the beautiful hand crafted timber trophies which were kindly donated by Enid and cleverly created by her husband, Dennis. Anna proved without doubt what a worthy contender she is for this unique Challenge, as she had previously partnered with Elaine Shand in 2013 to also win the event. This popular competition with its unusual format, was first introduced by Enid in 2012 and has provided great enjoyment, together with some highs and lows (as is customary in golf), for the participants over the past four years. We sincerely thank Enid (and Dennis) for their generosity and support of the Challenge. The winners of the day’s event last Wednesday claimed the very generous and well received trophies donated by Sally Beresford. With both players in good form of late, Millie Harris and Peg James combined well on the day to come in with a great score of 69 ¾ to be the clear winners. Jen Townsend and Cheryl Shanley continued with their purple patch and remained “in the money” when they came in as the runners up on 72 5/8. Third place went to a couple of well renowned “A Grade Champions”, Shirley Avery and Sally Beresford on 73 ¼ with Marianne Mannell and Mary Atkins happy with their round to take fourth place on 74 ¾. Our NTP winners were Desiree Whitton/Liz Fisher (1st) and Marianne Mannell/Mary Atkins (6th). 16 balls were awarded to a score of 78 ¼. Friday’s Stableford event was well supported with 37 players enabling a competition catering for three divisions. Narelle Butcher was the winner on a c/b with 33pts in Div 1 from Noeline Smith, and Peg James placed 3rd on 32. Cathy Jones placed 1st in Div 2 on a c/b from Sonya Baker with 35pts and Shirley Avery with 32 was 3rd on a c/b. Helen Hopwood was 1st in Div 3 with 33 just ahead of Bev Snowdon on 32 and Royer Smith was 3rd with 31 on a c/b. Due to heavy overnight rain and the unpredictable state of the weather early on Saturday morning, the Saturday Ladies Party Day has been postponed to 28 November. Eight hardy golfers participated in a Stableford event, with light showers and overcast skies. Peg James had a good week and continued her winning streak, returning the best score on Saturday to be the winner on 32pts. Elaine Shand had a lovely shot on the 1st to be the winner of the NTP. Chrissy was the ball winner. Our AGM was held last Sunday and saw our 2015 committee re-elected for another term. Heather Robinson has once again taken on the position of President for 2016; Julie White (Vice President); Noeline Smith (Captain); Lyn Dahl (Honorary Secretary); Marilyn Powell (Treasurer); and Mary Katte (Handicapper); Mary Atkins, Trish Clarke, Liz Fisher, Peg James and Jen Townsend are our Committee ladies and have all taken on various positions and roles within the Committee. The Monday players held their party day this week with a 4 Person drop out Ambrose event generously sponsored by Grafton Textiles and we thank Steven for his much appreciated support of our Monday players. Details of the results and happenings on this day will be available in next week’s report. Julie White
