Grafton Veteran Golfer, Ron Baker, enjoyed a week of golf he will not forget for a long time. Ron’s great form began last Tuesday when he cleaned up in both the veterans and members competition. His score of 43pts in both competitions was by far the best with his nearest competition being Ken Mackenzie and Bib Fish who both recorded scores of 39pts. These results were just the beginning, because in last Saturday’s Grafton Motor Group, 18 hole Stableford, Ron compiled a score of 40pts to win that event from 4 players on 39pts. Those 4 players being John Tibbs (14) winner of B Grade. A visitor from Yamba, Ken Dewar (16) which rewarded him with C Grade as well as Terry Bowe (15) and Karl Studd (14) both players securing the runner up positions in their respective grades. There will be no doubt some downward pressure on Ron Baker’s then handicap of 23, which is a fair reward. Thirty eight points was the score from Danny Li (8) which gave him the A Grade win from John Thompson (9) on 37pts. The same 2 results were the winning scores in D Grade with Michael Corfe (24), just edging out Billy Collins (31). To win a Pro-ball on the day you required a score of 34pts or better on a countback. Next Saturday the competition will be a 4BBB sponsored by Bothamley & O’Donohue Surveyors. This is a rare form of competition in our Golf Programme, despite being a very popular format. As a result, nominations for the event will prove to be strong. To secure your preferred time slot it would be to your advantage to nominate early. There are a couple of events coming up for which nominations are now being accepted. Firstly the Maclean round of the Tooheys Shield is scheduled for Sunday 20th September. Club Captain Neil Hayward is wanting to take s strong team to contest the event. Should you be able to play the nomination sheet is up on the notice board. Following on from that event, the next T.G.I.F Competition is to be held on the Grafton course on Friday 26th September. Play in this competition will commence with a 11.30 am shotgun. As normal the start time will be preceded by a draw for partners and the occasional social drink. The nomination sheet for this event is up on the T.G.I.F Notice board. Our Golf Professional Mark Harvison is seeking assistance for a working bee to be held on Monday 14th September between the hours of 9 am to 12 noon. The aim of the project is to pick up rocks and any sticks on the new 14th and 15th holes. This will not only benefit the playing conditions for our regular playing members, but also enhance those 2 particular holes for the up coming Pro-Am. The working bee is open to both men and lady members and all you need to bring are gloves, a bucket and if possible a pick, or some utensil to dig up the rocks. As a reward for your efforts on that day, a sausage sizzle will be provided for lunch. Not only will you enjoy the company of fellow members, but you will also contribute to improved conditions for all our members, as well as the visiting Professional Golfers contesting the Pro-Am. For details just contact Mark or Jo in the Pro-Shop. You may not have known about it, last Sunday, a Veterans Open mixed event was held which attracted a field of just 20 players. No doubt highlighting the popularity of 2 person ambrose events, mixed or otherwise. For the record the combination of Neil Hayward and Janeen Roberts were the victors from the Husband and wife pairing of Norm and Judy Burt with nett scores of 61 3/4 and 66 1/4 respectively. The Burt team also picked 3 of the 4 nearest the pin trophies on offer for the day as a bonus. Ray Hopwood
