One of the highlights of this past week was the official opening of our new Par 3 10th. Performing the opening duties were two of our Club’s Life Members, Arthur Bernard and John Tibbs in whose honour the hole will be recognized.
A second highlight of the weekend was the ultra successful Charity Day held on Sunday in aid of Muscular Dystrophy NSW (Research). The success of the event no doubt due to the efforts of Reg and Kay McLennan who were responsible for the promotion and sponsorship of the competition. Final dollar figures raised on the day were still being compiled at the time of preparing this report, however organisers of the day are confident that the final figure will even exceed last years record amount.
In the numerical sense, the winners of the golf competition were the husband and wife combination of Marilyn and Warren Powell who accumulated a great score of 47 Stableford points to defeat their nearest rivals Steve and Denise Llewellyn and Ken McKenzie and Eric Hillas, both teams on 45pts and were rewarded with 2nd runner up and runner up spots respectively.
Proceeding all this of course was Saturday’s event which was a 2 man Ambrose, sponsored by Cromack Transport, which attracted a very healthy field of almost 140 starters. With a gross score of 61 off the stick, and allowing for their handicap of just 1 1/2 Jake Frame and Jessie Boffey completed their 18 holes with an excellent score of 59 1/2 nett. Paul Ensby and John Hough made the most of their 5 1/4 handicap to claim the runner up spot with 59 3/4 (65 gross) on a countback from Rod Masen and Dan Hillier whose 6 1/4 handicap (gross66) was just quite not enough to finish ahead of the Ensby/Hough combination.
The event also served as the qualifier for the Grafton Glass 2 man Ambrose Knockout and if you have had a score of 67 1/4 or better, you have made the cut.
The Mark Harvison Pro Pin from last Saturday was won by Tony Blackadder whose tee shot finished just 124 cm from the cup, just edging out Jessie Boffey to claim the prize. Pro-Balls went down to 65 1/4.
On this coming Saturday, Muddys & Studdys Servo (Karl Studd) will be providing the trophies for a 18 hole single Stableford. This will be the 1st opportunity for many to experience the new Par 3 10th, whose rating has been revised to number 11, where as the old 10th was regarded a lot more difficult being No. 3. All players should be aware that the rating of the entire 18 holes has now been amended to reflect the introduction of the new hole.
One future event which may need some thought is the 18 hole 2BBB scheduled for April 30 being sponsored on this occasion by Coopers Brewery. This will be the only opportunity to play any golf for a few days as the course, Club and Pro-Shop will all be closed from 1st – 3rd May.
Any concerns regarding the course closure should be directed to the Club’s Board of Directors.
The next 4 man Ambrose event is scheduled for May 14 and now would be opportune time to construct and enter your team for that particular competition as Ambrose events traditionally attract big fields.
As we all would know next Monday is Anzac Day and there will be some minor changes to normal Monday activities. The Club will be closed Monday morning and should open around 12-1pm. According to the official programme there will be a nine hole competition for those wanting a hit. Suggest you contact Mark Harvison in the Pro-Shop for appropriate details on 6642 5413. Ray Hopwood
