Grafton CWA end of year function

The last meeting of Grafton CWA for the year was held on Friday, December 8.

The meeting started with a report from the November Group meeting and Lyn was congratulated on winning the Group trophy for best Cultural Book. Ann, our new Treasurer, presented a very detailed report and outlined some of the changes that she is going to be making in the role. Annette, the previous Treasurer, was presented with a gift in recognition of her work as Treasurer – thank you Annette.

Lyn our Cultural Officer gave us each a copy of the brochure she and Lana had made, highlighting Grafton. This is our entry in the NSW CWA competition, it is very informative and well presented. She also told us about planned outings for next year and then June gave a profile of her life growing up on a property near Moree as one of 12 children.

Next, Lesley our Agriculture and Environment Officer gave a very informative report about seaweed, which is our product of study for the next year. It was fascinating to hear about the growth of the industry since 2010, about farming of seaweed, uses etc. We look forward to learning more.

Ruth gave a Handicraft report and told us about entries for next year’s Handicraft Day, then Wendy gave an International report about Christmas traditions in France, our country of study for the next year.

After the meeting we enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch. The food was organised and prepared by the Catering Committee, Lyn our Cultural Officer had prepared some entertaining games and activities with a festive theme, and Anne made decorations. Everyone dressed the part with Christmas t-shirts and jewellery. Instead of having a Secret Santa, we all put donations for the Royal Flying Doctor Service into a Christmas stocking. It was a very enjoyable lunch, despite being rather warm – the power in a large part of Grafton went off halfway through the meal, so no fans or air conditioning on a 35° day! Our enterprising ladies were recycling paper sheets from our Christmas games and using them as fans! Luckily, power came back on just in time to pack up. Thanks to everyone involved with preparations, catering and organisation.

Our next meeting will be on Friday February 9, starting with morning tea at 9.30am and followed by the meeting at 10am. New members are always welcome.

We would like to thank anyone who has supported Grafton CWA this year and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
