First day out for Brushgrove Junior Cricket

Capture   History was made last Saturday the 17th of October when Brushgrove Cricket Club fielded its first Junior cricket team in the Lower Clarence Cricket Association (LCCA) for over 15 years. Twelve young boys and girls have been hitting the nets, training hard for the past few weeks and all they have wanted to do was play a real game of cricket. Well it all finally came together for the under 12’s side who took on Lawrence Cricket Club at Brushgrove Oval. Lawrence won the toss and sent Brushy into the heavily dewed field to bowl first. Being the first game for all members of the team, it was a very much unknown game, but to the kids credit they all picked it up relatively quickly. Brushy bowlers were a little nervous to start with, but after a few over’s managed to pick up a much need wicket. Then a few retirements and a few more wickets lifted the team. The kids found it tough with a ball that looked more like a shot-put (due to morning dew) but they managed to get past it and all bowled well. At the end of the innings Brushy had picked up 8 Lawrence wickets for 93 runs. A mighty effort from the 12 first timers. Keen to get in and bat, unfortunately Brushy lost an opener early but steadied with the next 3 batters all retiring after a good allotment of over’s. The middle order held their own scoring when possible, but a few wickets fell until a great little knock from young Ashdon who put on 16 runs including a 6 and several 4’s. Brushy ended up with only 6 wickets down for 76 runs after their 30 over’s. A real great start to the season for the kids who played in great spirit and sportsmanship. Brushy have a bye next week but will be ready to go against Iluka at Iluka in a fortnight.
