There were some close fought matches during the first two rounds played on the Tuesday with the quarter finals and semi finals of the Open Division played on Thursday, with two hard fought semi finals between the two Maclean teams of Jane Hannah and Lee Rae against Sandra Ferro and Cheryl Johnson. With the score 10-9 to Jane on the 12th end, Jane and Lee stepped up the pace with consistent bowling from both girls. The final score was 21-10 despite some excellent bowling from Sandra and Cheryl who were unable to capitalise.
The second semi final was a dour match between South Grafton’s Candy Nixon and Merle King against Yamba’s Joan Scadden and Lorraine Asbury, with the score locked on 12-12 on the 12th end, the lead then changed from end to end with excellent bowling from all four girls. The score reached 16-15 in Joan and Lorraine’s favour on the 16th end however Candy and Merle scored 3 shots on the 17th end sealing the match with the final score 20-16.
The final between Candy and Merle against Jane and Lee to be played this coming Thursday, April 27 at Yamba WBC promises to be a nail biter.
The semi finals and final of the Senior Pairs was also played at Yamba on Thursday between Yamba’s Marj Thompson and Robyn McPherson against Grafton District Services Bev Murray and Annette Williams, with the Grafton team getting away to a good start to lead 11-4 on the 12th end. Marj and Robyn staged a late comeback to reach 14-7 on the 15th end but consistently close bowling from Bev and Annette saw them take the match 17-10.
The second semi final between South Grafton’s Jen Axon and Dee Allison and Red Rock’s Carol Newman and Pat Donaldson proved to be a nail biter with Jen and Dee holding shot, only to be thwarted by Carol’s superb bowling under pressure with Carol and Pat taking the match 18-9.
The final was played after lunch with both teams playing excellent bowls and the scores changing after each bowl, with Bev and Annette’s experience and consistency proving to be the difference, with the final score of 17-9 not indicating the true calibre of the game.
Congratulations to the Grafton girls who will now play in the Regional play off’s to be held in the Mid North Coast District from 2nd – 5th August 2 – 5 at a venue to be advised.
