Brooms Head’s Steve Colley takes District Reserve Singles

  Over the past two weekends the Yamba Bowling and Recreation Club hosted the CRDBA 2016 President’s Reserve Singles Championship. A large contingent of 53 nominations entered the competition and by last Sunday afternoon the field had been reduced to the final two bowlers; Steve Colley of Brooms Head and Ross Murphy representing Maclean. Ross was hoping to provide the Maclean Club with a win and a clean sweep of the District 2016 Singles titles following Warren McDonald’s win in the Open category and Gary Scott’s victory in the Seniors championship. The Reserve final promised to be an exciting affair as the standard of play throughout the championship had been exceptional with many spectators in awe at the level of skilled displayed. The first few ends of the match were typical of a final with both bowlers demonstrating a few nerves but neither prepared to give away any easy shots. After 12 ends Ross led narrowly 13-12. Steve called upon all his considerable experience, guile and cunning and piled on 16 unanswered shots before Ross managed to break free. Trailing 28-14 Ross regained his concentration and raised one last attempt to progress his score. However, it was Steve that continued preside over the direction of the contest, taking title 31-20 in a thoroughly entertaining contest. The championship was played in near perfect conditions on high quality Greens and was characterised not only by the standard of play but also the outstanding sportsmanship shown by all participants. The next club championships to be contested are the mixed pairs, major/minor pairs and minor triples championships with nomination sheets already posted on the notice board. Please check the board for closing and competition dates. An afternoon of mixed social bowls is scheduled for Sunday 29th May with play commencing at 1pm. The nomination sheet is on the notice board and names need to be entered by 11.30am on Sunday. Social bowls continues with pairs on Wednesday and triples on Friday. All games commence at 1pm and names need to be on the respective nomination sheets by 11.30am on the day of play. Visitors are welcomed.
