A large contingent of 53 nominations entered the competition and by last Sunday afternoon the field had been reduced to the final two bowlers; Steve Colley of Brooms Head and Ross Murphy representing Maclean. Ross was hoping to provide the Maclean Club with a win and a clean sweep of the District 2016 Singles titles following Warren McDonald’s win in the Open category and Gary Scott’s victory in the Seniors championship.
The Reserve final promised to be an exciting affair as the standard of play throughout the championship had been exceptional with many spectators in awe at the level of skilled displayed.
The first few ends of the match were typical of a final with both bowlers demonstrating a few nerves but neither prepared to give away any easy shots. After 12 ends Ross led narrowly 13-12. Steve called upon all his considerable experience, guile and cunning and piled on 16 unanswered shots before Ross managed to break free. Trailing 28-14 Ross regained his concentration and raised one last attempt to progress his score. However, it was Steve that continued preside over the direction of the contest, taking title 31-20 in a thoroughly entertaining contest.
