Yamba Women’s Major Minor Pairs finals time

Semi finals in the Yamba women’s bowls Major Minor Pairs should see two close contests after the quarter finals last week. The semis were set down for Tuesday 22, with the final to be played on Thursday 24. In the semis Gabby Freeman/Sonia Graham are up against Jan Funnell/Monica Conlan, and Kerry Pedder/Cathryn Aitchison will oppose Cheryl Deveney/Denise Burey. Monica Conlan is developing a reputation for coming from behind to win on the last end, scoring her third of these in a recent major competition, when she and partner Jan Funnell defeated Joan Scadden and Ruthie Fletcher in the last round. In a game where there were never more than three shots the difference, on 15 ends the score was 11 all. Joan and Ruthie then edged in front with a two shot lead on 17. Despite Joan’s best efforts, Monica held her nerve for them to go on and win 14-13 in a marvellous game. In the other quarter final, there were also some wonderful bowls played. There was a great tussle early between Bev Shatte/Lyn Olsson and Kerry Pedder/Cathryn Aitchison with the scores 6 all on 10 ends. But then Kerry and Cathryn found a purple patch, and maintained their form to win 17-7. In the final game, Cheryl Deveney/Denise Burey surged early in their game against Colleen Beard/Gwen Hoskin to deny their opponents any shots until the 7th end. Colleen and Gwen strived hard to cut back the deficit, but finally went down 30-9. In social bowls on Tuesday 15, winners were Sandy Owens/ Beryl Neilsen/ Ros Dickson won by one shot from Peg Wales, Jill Miller and Val Terry; while the runners up prize went to Liz Moodie/Bev Lawson who defeated the consolation winners Helen Atkinson/Judy Sinclair, also by just one shot. Other social bowls results for 15th also testified to the insights of the selectors as all were very even match ups. In them: Glenda Davis/ D Collier d J Pearson/R Hippisley; B Mills/C Hasemann/K Maosn d G Hall/F Reeves/W Bell and M Sakac/Gloria Davis d R McKibbin/W Ballantyne (even though Wendy made them play on the incorrect rink!) Social bowls continued on Thursday 17th and winners were Flo Stephens, Jenny Scobie and Kerry Pedder over Colleen Beard, Gwen Hoskin and Carol Casement. Other winners included Cheryl Deveney and Ros Dickson, the runners up, with a win over Maria Sakac and Jane Pearson. Consolation winners were Bev Shatte and Judy Sinclair who went down to Helen Scott and Marie Stone. In the other game Bev Grimes/Faye Reeves/ Judy Button d Jenny Ridgway/Beryl Nielsen/Ruthie Fletcher. Members are reminded that there are some notices on the board that require attention. These are the nomination sheets for the Major Consistency, Minor Consistency, Pennant for 2016 and District Gala Day. Wendy Ballantyne
