Thursday, March 2 saw the Club Fours Championship decided – this final was set down for February 28 but the very welcome 80mm of rain we received on that day washed out play. The two contending teams of Sandy Owen, Maria Sakac, Ruth Fletcher and Judy Button against Glenda Davis, Sonia Graham, Lorraine Asbury and Marie Stone started out very evenly with the scores 3-2 after four ends. Judy’s team played steadily to win the next five ends but then Marie’s team kicked into gear and after being behind for 11 ends hit the front on the 12th. The scores were then 11-10. From there on Glenda, Sonia, Lorraine and Marie really ‘put the pedal to the metal’ as the saying goes and came in with a convincing win 30-10. They are now the proud holders of the Gloria Haines Shield. The Fours Championship was an intriguing comp this year with some of the more favoured teams being eliminated early, it is great to see newer players being encouraged to participate in our Club competitions. Whilst this final was being played, our social players took to the Greens for some serious Pennant practise with games of two bowl triples – Sue Lindsay, Barb Cross, Judy Pryor had a convincing win over Gloria Davis, Margaret Abbott, Marj Thompson and took home the money as well. Wynne Bell, Helen Atkinson, Joan Scadden d Bev Shatte, Pam Conley, Judy Abbott who picked up the consolation prize. Jenny Ridgway, Ros Hippisley, Val Terry, Ros Dickson just scraped home over Jenny Ridgway, Marg Wall, visitor Fran Green and Denise Burey 19-17. Next week sees the start of the 2017 Pennant season but social bowls will continue for those not involved and any visitors. Kaye Mason
