Yamba Men’s Bowls… Pennants results
A great afternoon of Pennant competition was witnessed last Saturday with the club’s two Grade 6 sides competing. The Grade 6 Blue combination took on the strength of South Grafton Ex-Services Club and was determined to close out the last few games of the year in style. True to their word it was all style as they gained a valuable and courageous victory 71 – 55 (nine points to one). The win was based upon the tremendous form of Alan Turnbull and his team of Keith Smith, Graham Cole and Andy Duke-Yonge; Chris Gunning’s team also produced an import rink win while Bruce Kilby’s team fought back from a horror start to regain some valuable shots for the master scoreboard. Overall a great team effort. The ‘Blues’ hope to make it two in a row next Saturday at ‘woolly’ Wooli.
The Grade 6 Gold side fought valiantly against a very strong and experienced Maclean combination and suffered a disappointing, but noteworthy, 53 – 48 loss (nine points to one). The ‘Golds’ almost achieved a miraculous win as Richard Skippings and his team of Paul Lozelle, Frank Pate and David Coupland romped home for a 25 – 15 win on their rink. Jim Groom played particularly well in the team skipped by Roger Porra which was defeated by one shot, 15 – 14. The ‘Golds’ will travel to South Grafton next week in their quest to topple the ladder leaders.
The Grade 7 side travelled to Iluka and were always going to find the going tough against this very strong lower grade combination. True to form Iluka dominated the contest and ran out convincing 77 – 40 (ten points to nil) victors. Next week the Grade 7 side are at home against Red Rock with the game commencing at 11am. Also playing at Yamba next Saturday for the final round of competition in their respective grades is the Grade 3 side against Maclean, Grade 4 against South Grafton Ex-Services and Grade 5 against Grafton.
The semi-finals of the 2016 Major Singles Championship will be contested on Sunday, 1st May, with games commencing at 1pm. The first semi-final has Brad Johnson doing battle with Graham Meany after Brad and Graham disposed of their quarter-final opponents, John Luchetti and Trevor Bardsley, by 31 shots to 19. The second semi-final will be a battle royale with Peter Forrester and Steve Kliendienst up against each other. In the quarter-finals, Peter overcame the dangerous Mark Scobie 31 – 20, while Greg Dickman found the consistency of Steve Kliendienst too much going down 31 – 16.
