Yamba Masters Surf Carnival

A very successful Masters Surf Carnival was held at Main Beach Yamba on Saturday February 17 with over 100 competitors from 15 visiting surf clubs from Mooloolaba in the north to Port Macquarie in the south taking part.

The carnival was held in testing surf conditions with 27 Yamba masters competing with great enthusiasm and team spirit.

For the 3rd consecutive year Yamba was able to use its home beach advantage to take out the pointscore for the Brunswick Hotel Trophy.

Results

1st Yamba 203 points; 2nd Mermaid Beach 162; 3rd Mooloolaba 80; 4th Port Macquarie 58; 5th North Burleigh 52; 6th Kurrawa 49.

Yamba club captain Frankie Aird won the Con Asmussen Award for most outstanding performance of the day when she cracked a big dumping wave and held it all the way to the beach to lead the field home in the Female Surf Teams event.  

Yamba winners in the surf races were – Alan Lawrence 70 plus age group; Michael Stubbs 50/59 yrs; Joe Dougherty 40/49 yrs; Jeunesse Meldrum 40/49 yrs.

In the board races Yamba winners were – Peter Rheinberger 60/69 yrs; Joe Dougherty 40/49 yrs; Rachelle Dean 40/49 yrs; and Frankie Aird 30/39 yrs.

Yamba won both the male over 110 years plus surf teams (Joe Dougherty, Kirk Palmer & Alan Dunne) and female over 110 years plus surf teams (Frankie Aird, Jeunesse Meldrum & Rachelle Dean).

Yamba also won the male over 110 years plus board relay (Joe Dougherty, Alan Dunne & Jacob Don) and female over 110 years plus board relay (Frankie Aird, Leah Curtis & Jeunesse Meldrum)

Congratulations to all those over 30 years members who took part, including some in their very first surf carnival.

Notes

Yamba competitors now look forward to the NSW State Titles at Queenscliff Beach for nippers on March 7-10 and Masters on March 13-14 whilst the boat crews will be competing in Round 8 of the North Coast Boat Series at Evans Head this Saturday.
