Sassafras Pasta and Pizza Restaurant Bowler of the Month: Graham Meany, in action against Peter Forrester during the Major Singles quarter-finals last Sunday.
Graham Meany continued his recent run of good form by collecting the Sassafras Pasta and Pizza Restaurant sponsored Bowler of the Month Award for May. Graham edged out this year’s Minor Singles Champion, Jeff Cook, to claim the award in another exciting contest. The quarter-finals of the 2015 Major Singles Championship were contested this week with four outstanding games of bowls on display. In the first game Steve Kliendienst and Martyn Wood came face to face and after 38 pulsating ends of bowls and having played the penultimate bowl of the end, Steve was holding game only to see Martyn deliver the bowl of the match to snatch a 31 to 30 victory. In the game between Chris Muldoon and Ray Schafer there were never more than a few shots separating these two evenly matched bowlers. Ray appeared to be holding game having played his final bowl of the fortieth end only to see Chris produce a championship moment and draw the shot through the narrowest of gaps. After a marathon 40 ends Chris Muldoon defeated Ray Schafer 31 to 29. Chris will face Alan Abbott who defeated Trevor Bardsley 31 to 23. This was a game of contrasting styles with Alan’s aggressive ‘no holds barred’ tactics eventually succeeding over Trevor’s technically precise draw bowl approach. In the remaining quarter-final, Graham Meany’s run of success came to an abrupt halt when he was defeated by Peter Forrester 31 to 21. Peter started the game brilliantly and managed to put Graham under early pressure and although Graham fought back to trail 17 to 18 after 24 ends, it was Peter who produced the big bowls when required to move ahead and claim the victory. Next weekend will be a huge two days of bowls at Yamba with the semi-finals of the Major Singles Championships scheduled for Saturday, with the final and the delayed final of the Mixed Pairs Championship, where Robyn McPherson and Allan Parker will be up against Beryl McConnell and Bruce Angel, scheduled for Sunday. Games will commence at 1pm each day. Nomination sheets for this year’s Fours, C Grade Singles and Major/Minor Pairs Championships, as well as the RSL Zone 7 Pairs Championship and the RSL Friendship Day at Grafton on Monday 6th July are on the notice board. Social bowls continues with pairs on Wednesday and triples on Friday. All games commence at 1pm and names have to be on the respective nomination sheets by 11.30am on the day of play.
