It is quarter-final time in the Major Minor Pairs at YWBC, with games having been played on Tuesday 15 September. With one game played in advance of the date, Gabby Freeman and Sonia Graham have already advanced to the semi – final with a good win over Helen Scott and Robyn McPherson on Tuesday 8. Sonia and Gabby got off to a great start to lead 10 – nil after only three ends. But Helen and Robyn dug in and by the 14th end had taken a one shot lead 15-14. However, Gabby and Sonia again rose to the occasion, drawing level and then pushing on to deny their opponents any further chances, despite Helen and Robyn’s best efforts. In a withering finish, Gabby and Sonia ran out deserving winners, 24-15. They will now meet the winner of last Tuesday’s game between Jan Funnell/Monica Conlan and Ruthie Fletcher/ Joan Scadden. The latter game, along with the other quarter finals should provide some enthralling contests. The results were not available on going to press. These games saw Bev Shatte/ Lyn Olssen take on Kerry Pedder/Cathryn Aitchison and Colleen Beard/ Gwen Hoskin play Cheryl Deveny/Denise Burey. The semi-finals are scheduled for Tuesday 22 September, allowing for the Inter-district games at Cabarita Beach on Thursday and Friday 17 and 18 September. On that note, YWBC wishes Clarence District all the best in this contest, and congratulates the seven members of our club who have been chosen the represent the district. They are: Helen Atkinson, Wendy Ballantyne, Wynn Bell, Monica Conlan, Robyn McPherson, Joan Scadden and Marjorie Thompson. It is encouraging that last week’s numbers at social bowls remained solid, despite a number of our members supporting the Iluka and McLean clubs in the tournaments they staged. On Tuesday 8, Ros Hippisley and Val Terry teamed up to win the lucky rink winner’s prize with a narrow victory over Peg Wales and Denise Collier. The consolation prize went to Faye Reeves, Val Pate and Cathryn Aitchison who went down to Gwen Hoskin, Cheryl Deveney and Marj Thompson. Other games saw Liz Moodie/Kerry Pedder defeat Raels McKibbin/Beryl Neilsen and Joan Corr, Bev Lawson, Gloria Davis get up over Joan Corr, Glenda Davis and Carol Casement. Then on Thursday 10, Bev Grimes, Val Pate and Robyn McPherson took out the lucky rink prize when they defeated Jenny Ridgway, Flo Stephens and Joan Scadden. Then two teams who played out a battle royal each came away with prizes when Gwen Hoskin/Jan Jeans were the lucky runners up, downing Beryl Neilsen / Wynn Bell (consolation winners) by just one shot. Also on Thursday 10, Sandy Owens/Judy Sinclair d Colleen Beard/Ros Dickson and Glenda Davis/ Helen Scott/Marie Stone d Faye Reeves/Kerry Pedder/Bev Shatte. Finally, members of YWBC have been deeply saddened by the passing of our much loved and respected Life Member, Gloria Haines. Wonderful memories of Gloria remain with us, and we extend to her family and friends our deepest sympathy. Wendy Ballantyne
