Opening Day on Monday, October 12, was a glorious Yamba day, and the 204 ladies who competed in the Foursomes events appeared to enjoy our course. The Westlawn/BWAC Annual October Tournament is well regarded and many players return year after year. One person mentioned that she had been coming for 20 years and a few of the ladies who were here for the first time were delighted to see grazing kangaroos. Foursomes winners were: Gross winners Division 1 – Narelle Norris (Sanctuary Cove) and Wendy Shanahan (Yamba); Nett winners – Jo Horton and Mary Harrison (Wauchope). Gross winners Division 2 – Sandra Hansson (Gold Coast Country Club) and Jennifer Palmer (Emerald Lakes). Nett winners – Irene Williams and Moira Morrow (Yamba). Tuesday, October 13 brought another sunny morning and although the weather was threatening to rain late in the day, the field was through before it started. Two hundred ladies attended the Tournament dinner and enjoyed the wonderful show which was organised by Penny Cope and Deirdre Gough, and compared by Jen O’Neill. Some commented that it was the best concert Yamba Lady Golfers has yet produced, and the dance floor was packed until well into the night. On Wednesday October 14, early morning rain clouds cleared and it was again a lovely sunny day. The final rounds of Stroke and Stableford were played. The overall winner and Tournament Champion was Darrie Nightingale. Although Darrie has been a Tournament Champion previously, she was then playing as a member of the Asquith Golf Club. Darrie is now residing permanently in Yamba and this is her first Tournament win as a member of Yamba Golf & Country Club. Major Tournament winners are: Division 1 Gross – Darrie Nightingale; Division 2 Gross – Christine Poole, Indooroopilly; Division 3 Gross – Judy McCosker, Merewether; Division 4 Gross – Moira Morrow, Yamba; Division 5 Gross (Stableford) – Kay Caller.
