Yamba Handicap Fours… a frustrating conclusion

The 2015 Handicap Fours Championship was contested last weekend with the format of the championship ensuring several surprise results and a host of tight finishes. The menacing quartet of Rod O’Brien, John Parkinson, Alan Reed and John Luchetti captured the title by defeating Keith Smith, Don Freeman, Martyn Wood and Bruce Angel in the final by 19 shots to 16. The outcome was a frustrating conclusion for Bruce Angel and his team in what was otherwise an impressive championship campaign. However, the winners fully deserved their success as they improved with every game and controlled the final magnificently leading the game for 20 of the 21 contested ends of play. Rod O’Brien dominated the match using the battery of skills developed under Tasmanian conditions to establish early dominance on most ends, the experienced John Parkinson reinforced the great starts with monotonous regularity and Alan Reed then followed his skip’s instructions religiously to set up a great win. The results deservedly provided John Luchetti with his maiden Club Championship victory and one feels that the floodgates may well open. If effort is rewarded then John deserves many more victories considering the long hours he spends on enhancing his game and assisting the development of new members as a volunteer club coach.
