Two very similar games got the Fours Championships underway at Yamba Womens Bowling Club on Thursday February 18. Each game was a real tussle until one team grabbed the ascendency with a six toward the end of the game. Playing the only Round 1 game, the Sonia Graham-skipped team of Glynis Hall, Margaret Durante and Beryl Neilsen had a very close encounter until the 21st end when they picked up their six when their opponents were only three behind, to finally prevail 29-21 over Raels McKibbin, Jill Miller, Cheryl Deveny, and Chris Cole. In this game it was terrific to see some of our relatively new bowlers on each team getting some valuable experience and coming up with some fine bowls, and also the guidance being provided by the more experienced players. The other game was an early Round 2 matchup between Sandy Owen, Ros Moore, Robyn McPherson and Marjorie Thompson and Bev Shatte, Lily Medhurst, Judy Sinclair and Beryl McConnell. This was also a very even game in which all players shone at various stages. Then on the 18th end Marj’s team snared a valuable six to put them three shots up and powered on to win 30-15. Sonia’s team will now take on defending champions, Val Terry, Wynne Bell, Kaye Mason and Wendy Ballantyne in the second round on Thursday February 25. Other 2nd Round games will be between the teams skipped by Catherine Aitchison and Ruthie Fletcher and of Monica Conlan and Isabel Neill. Marj and her team will take on the winner of the latter game in the semi-finals, set down for March 1. And in other news, Ruthie Fletcher’s terrific rule and Princess of the Green has come to an end this time round. Ros Dickson has taken the crown in a second half burst, when on 14 ends the score stood at 13-12 to Ruthie. Ros powered home to win nine of the remaining 11 ends with lovely precise draw bowls and took the match 24-15. With so many Championships on and Pennants very soon, the Queen of the Green for Major Singles has stalled at present, and currently resides with Catherine Atchison. In the winners’ circle at social bowls on Tuesday 16 were: Lucky Rink winners – Keryn Tyler/ Marg Wall/ Barb Briers who defeated the Lucky Consolation winners – Glynis Hall/Colleen Beard/Lily Medhurst, while the pairing of Sandra Dorman and Beryl McConnell were the Lucky runners up. On Thursday 18 the spoils went to Gwen Hoskin/Carol Casement/Val Terry as Lucky Rink winners. Runners up in the lucky draw were Jenny Scobie/Mirtha Christian/ Judy Button who defeated the Consolation winners Pam Conley/Helen Atkinson/ Denise Burey. It is getting very close to the closing date for District Championships, and any members who still wish to enter should do so with the secretary before March 3. Wendy Ballantyne
