Funding through the National Landcare Programme has been provided to Angourie-Community-Coastcare to develop a walk through Angourie Reserve from Green Point to Angourie Point following the old tram line that led to the quarry (via Spooky Gully Nature Walk) to the pools. The walk then proceeds up the bull-ant track to the headland lookout and then down to the point. It will also pass the site of Waver’s Inn which was originally used for the storage of explosives used in the quarry in the late 1890s. Funding will be used for the development of a few information displays highlighting the cultural and natural heritage of the area. “We are currently gathering historical material so if you have any old photos such as picnicking at Flea Island, early surfing days or anything at all, we would love to see them, ” says John Webber, project coordinator. Other works on the project will include: Improvements to the track, boardwalk construction, drainage, erosion and weed control. Planting of local native species will further help the rehabilitation of degraded areas. “The Heritage Walk will provide a very pleasant and informative experience for residents and visitors.” Said John Webber. Angourie Community Coastcare volunteers will be holding the usual working bees on the third Sunday of each month so if you feel inclined, please come along, bring the kids and have some fun.
