The finals of the Handicap Singles Match Play Championships for 2015 were held on Monday of last week in perfect weather conditions. Our Champions for this year are: Div 1 Peg James who defeated Dot Newton on the 18th. Peg receives the Rita Short and Joyce Weatherstone Perpetual Brooch. Div 2 is Shirley Avery who defeated Soo McPherson 3/2 and will receive the Patsy Morrissey Perpetual Brooch. Div 3 is Julie White who defeated Liz Smith 4/3 and she will receive the Audrey Palmer Perpetual Brooch. We sincerely thank our very generous sponsors last Wednesday, Michelle and Andrew of Gumtree Retreat (Health Retreat and Day Spa), for their continued support of our ladies golf. With our annual President’s versus Captain’s Day, we saw a field of 60 starters participate in the 18-hole Stableford event. Our captain Noeline Smith’s team returned an average score of 30.69pts to be crowned this year’s winners over president Heather Robinson’s team, who recorded an average of 26.17pts. Captain Noeline was pleased to take the trophy from president Heather whose team had managed to receive the winning title and silver cup for the previous 2 years. In 2014 this event also saw the inaugural South versus North competition incorporated into the President versus Captain Day. The suggestion for the event was the idea of one of our stalwart golfers, Gai Leeson and it was very fitting that Gai was the winner of the Peg James donated raffle for the day. The individual winners from last Wednesday’s event were Fay Shields on 38 for the Captain/Grafton side and Kaye Murdoch also on 38 for the President/South side. All players on the Captain/Grafton side received a ball. NTPs were awarded to Noeline (Grafton Ladies sponsored 1st), Janette Blair (MJO Legal sponsored 6th), Janet Croft (Clarence Valley Tyre Centre sponsored 10th) and Liz Fisher with a great second shot on the (First National Ford and Dougherty sponsored 17th). We were delighted to welcome 2 visitors from Tasmania to our field last Wednesday. Rosie Patton and Sharon Crowdon both enjoyed our course and their day with us and were more than happy to be a part of the Captain’s winning team. Friday’s Stableford event had 33 starters participate in the competition on a beautiful spring day. The 2015 in form golfer Sonya Baker came in as the winner of Div 1 with 37pts from Soo McPherson on 34 on a c/b from Janet Croft. The golden girl of Grafton Ladies Golf, Sally Beresford, is making a real impact with her return to golf following injury and health problems and was thrilled to come in as the Div 2 winner on an awesome 40pts. We love your work, Sal! In 2nd place was Helen Hopwood on 34 with Mary Katte placing 3rd on 33. The Good Intent Hotel sponsored NTPs were taken by Bev Snowdon (6th) and Mary Atkins (10th). Nine Saturday ladies played an 18-hole Stroke round for the September Monthly Medal and 7th Captain’s Trophy. Shirley Goodger returned the best score to come in as the competition winner and also receive the medal for the day on 71 nett. The recently returned European traveller, Marianne Mannell, was obviously not affected by her holiday break when she came in 2nd on 73 on a c/b. Janette Blair was the ball winner. Courtney was the best putter in the club on the day with 28. Our annual 4BBB Jacaranda Open Day sponsored by Westlawn Finance Ltd. is set down for Friday 30 October and entries are now being accepted for this event. Julie White
