Successful October Tournament Yamba ladies

Yamba Ladies Golf has just completed their annual three-day tournament in almost perfect weather conditions. One hundred and fifty ladies representing 25 clubs from Victoria to Queensland participated in the tournament which apart from three days golf included many social activities. Many ladies return year after year and this year’s fine weather was a boon after last year’s washout.

On Monday night the daily presentation was followed by a fashion parade.  Each year the local fashion houses provide beautiful clothes and accessories which the ladies love viewing and subsequently end up leaving lots of their hard earned dollars in Yamba.

Tuesday night’s concert and dinner was attended by 138 ladies all dressed in their Roaring 20s finery. They were entertained by local drummers, tap dancers, jazz dancers, Nia group, line dancers, singers and local “so called” comediennes and then they danced the night away. From all reports everyone had a great time.

The major sponsor of this year’s tournament was Westlawn Financial and Insurance. Minor sponsors were Elders Real Estate, Yamba/Iluka Real Estate and Island Collective. Without the support of these local businesses we would not have been able to conduct such a successful tournament.

Monday’s Foursomes event was played by 150 ladies. Gross winners in Div 1 were S Walker (Coolangatta Tweed) and D Hutchesson (Emerald Lakes).  Gross winners in Div 2 were L Sentence and E Fraser (Port Macquarie). Nett winners in Division 1 H McFarlane and N Phillips (Maclean) and Div 2 nett winners were P Williams and K Fairhurst (Emerald Lakes).

Tuesday and Wednesday 140 ladies played a singles event. Grades 1, 2 and 3 played Stroke and Grade 4 played Stableford. Jim Dougherty, executive director of Westlawn Financial and Insurance was at Wednesday’s presentation to award the prizes to the winners.

Home town lady, Darrie Nightingale played beautifully and won the 36 hole gross competition. This is the fifth time Darrie has had her name on the cup. Well done Darrie. Pam Ford (Coolangatta/Tweed) was runner up. Grade 1 nett winner from Coolangatta/Tweed was Mary Barclay and runner up was Claudette Martin (Ocean Shores).

In Grade 2, the gross winner, backing up after a great foursomes win, was Helen Macfarlane (Maclean). Runner up was Julie Campbell (Yamba). Nett winner in Grade 2 was Gae Howell (Caloundra) and r/up was Carolyn Chester (Yamba).

Winner in Grade 3 gross was Lynda Sambolec (Links Hope Island) and r/up was Jenny Dewar (Yamba). Nett winner in Grade 3 was Gwynne Thomas (Yamba) with Elisabeth Fraser (Port Macquarie) the r/up.

The Grade 4 winner was Olga Little (Club Banora). Runners up were Jan Esplin (Tally Valley), Diane Andrews (Port Macquarie) and Judy Palich (Yamba).

It was great to see so many visitors taking out prizes.

Congratulations to the committee and their helpers for such a well conducted event.

Next year’s tournament is scheduled for October 12 – 14.  Put the date in your diary now if you want to have an enjoyable three days in Yamba.
