Barb and Merv Cassie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, surrounded by around 30 family and friends, on Saturday, March 18, at Grafton District Services Club. Barbara Smith and Mervyn Cassie were married in St Patrick’s Church Grafton, in March 1957 and made their home in Grafton. They have two sons, Grant and Brett, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The couple have only moved house four times during those sixty years and now reside in Hunter Street, South Grafton. Merv, who has five sisters, was the only son of William and Pearl Cassie. Between the six siblings, they have amassed an amazing 343 years of marriage. Clarrie and Dorothy Deece celebrated 48 years together, before Clarrie passed away after a short illness. Doug and Hazel Pullen celebrated 53 years, before Doug also passed away. Ken and Myrtle Cowan have now been married 63 years, and still together. Greg and Noeline Ryan celebrated their 60th anniversary last September and are also still counting. Now Mervyn and Barbara have reached this significant milestone. The remaining Cassie sibling, Beryl, and her husband Kel Phelps, will be celebrating their 60th anniversary also, on May 11 this year. Celebrating 50 years of marriage these days is an incredible feat, but for four out of six siblings to exceed 60 years of marriage, is phenomenal. All six children live locally, and, with the exception of Dorothy and Clarrie for a number of years, all have remained in the Clarence Valley. This has to be one for the record books.
