Jenny Scobie gets her bowl away very nicely

New Yamba bowls format is a winner

Triangular Singles was the order of the day for Yamba’s lady bowlers last Thursday, and it is proving to be a variation which members thoroughly enjoy. Bringing forth some fine Singles play, while giving all members practice in marking and scoring, the selection committee has hit on a winner with this format. With a number of members absent at the District Fours, there were nonetheless nine rinks full of the 27 keen singles bowlers. Top scorer with a total of 27 from her 18 ends was Beryl Evans, a pseudo visitor from Lithgow, who had convincing wins in each of her sets first against Raels McKibbin and then Barb Briers. In their set, Raels and Barb had a real tussle though, with Barb getting up by just a single shot. Other top two set totals were racked up by Lorraine Ashbury (25), Cathryn Aitchison and Marie Stone (22), and Judy Donnelly and Barbara Cross (21). The trio drawn for the lucky rink Bowlo Bucks winners were Ros Hippisley, Ruth Fletcher and Wynne Bell. These ladies had a terrific game, with them scoring 14, 15, and 13 shots respectively in their two hard fought sets each. Drawn for the lucky runners up bucks was the rink of Glenda Davis, Margaret Durante and Barbara Cross, while the runners up money went to Val Pate, Jenny Scobie and Coral Taylor. Meanwhile, congratulations to Cathryn Aitchison, who teamed up with Alan Abbott to become the inaugural District Champions in the State Mixed Pairs competition. This is an intriguing new concept, and we wish them well in the Regional contest later in the year. It is also pleasing to note the number of teams from our club remaining in the District Fours which continues this week at Grafton Services club. We hope they can keep the good times rolling. On the board is the nomination sheet for the Club Triples Championship. The first round is due to be played on 21st July. Names are also still being taken for the District Veterans Day being held at Red Rock on Thursday 28th July. Entries are still being accepted for the Blue Pacific Fours, which will be held on Tuesday 2nd August – not the Monday as it usually is. This is due to the men’s State No 3 Pennant playoffs being played over the preceding weekend at Maclean and Yamba, with the final at Yamba on Monday August 1st. Members please note that volunteers are still needed to ensure the smooth hosting of this fantastic event. Ladies are encouraged to be a part of it all. Wendy Ballantyne
