Major Triples underway at Yamba

  The finalists for this year’s Major Triples Championship have been decided following a weekend of brilliant team lawn bowls. The tussle for the title began with Round 1 on Saturday: John Luchetti teamed with Lew Saliba and Don Freeman to record a dominant 39 shot to 11 win over Ron Gildersleeve, Stuart Bell and Barry De-Bomford; Dave Crawford, Norm Sinclair and Steve Kliendienst surprised many with their victory over Mark Scobie, Trevor Bardsley and Bob Ballantyne 31 shots to 17; Allan Parker, Graham Meany and Peter Forrester overcame Earle Cochrane, Bill McDonald and Bruce Angel 23 to 15; and Erik Pedder’s team of Allan Marr and Bob McKibbin succumbed to Greg Dickman, Greg Johnson and Martyn Wood 24 to 20. In the quarter-finals Paul Lozelle, Wayne Curtis and Alan Abbott defeated Dave Crawford, Norm Sinclair and Steve Kliendienst 25 to 12; Greg Dickman, Greg Johnson and Martyn Wood recorded a solid 29 to 13 victory over Jamie Gordon, David Atkinson and Ian Lambert; Allan Parker, Graham Meany and Peter Forrester progressed at the expense of Graeme Brown, Chris Muldoon and the returning Brad Johnson; and it took an extra end for Jeff Cook, Bruce Blanch and Tom Morrow and to defeat Lew Saliba, Don Freeman and John Luchetti 23 to 22. The semi-finals were a highlight of the weekend with Tom Morrow, Jeff Cook and Bruce Blanch, playing inspired bowls to record a confidence boosting 26 shot to 17 victory over the well credentialed Allan Parker, Graham Meany and Peter Forrester; and the encounter between Paul Lozelle, Wayne Curtis and Alan Abbott and the combination of Greg Dickman, Greg Johnson and Martyn Wood was a classic with Martyn Wood’s team tasting success, 29 shots to 16. The final will be played on Sunday commencing at 1pm. The nomination sheets for the Club’s 2015 Mixed Fours and the Men’s Handicap Fours Championship are on the notice board with nominations closing on Wednesday 14th and 28th October respectively. The Queensland Railway Institute Social Bowls Club will be visiting the club next Sunday, 11th October, for a day of social mixed triples and the Park Beach Pirates will venture north the following week. Participation sheets for both visits are on the notice board. Social bowls continues with pairs played on Wednesday and triples on Friday. All games commence at 1pm and names need to be on the respective nomination sheets by 11.30am on the day of play. All nominations are guaranteed a game and visitors are most welcomed.
