Maclean Men’s Golf…great Course and visitors welcome

Wednesdays 9 Hole Skins event attracted 17 players. Richard Ross was the clear winner taking out five holes with John Parkes and John Porter on fire as well with four holes each. Thursdays Medley Stableford saw some fantastic scores. The overall winner on a countback was Ted Harvey with 42 points from Peter Hamilton also on 42. NTPs went to Theo Sheppard on the 2nd, Douglas Hudson on the 7th, Gary Cribb the 11th and Geoff Willis the 17th. You had to play to your handicap to secure a club ball with balls going down to 36 on a countback. Seven visitors who took up the challenge came from Yamba, Byron Bay and Bonville. Simon Commerford’s new five wood must be working well as he put together another tidy round of 37 points. Seems he lost the last one in the dam on the 17th along with a couple of balls. Hope this one floats! Gregor Simpson had a cart breakdown and Rod Smith offered to give him a push with his but they couldn’t get it to move. Didn’t notice it was up against a shrub. Very observant boys. Everyone is talking about how good the Course is looking at the moment with deep fairways and excellent greens. It is a real credit to our hard working greenkeeper John Causley, his staff and volunteers. Come out and try it, you won’t be disappointed. Saturdays event was a 4 Ball Best Ball sponsored by life member Gary McCudden and attracted a field of 92 players with 18 visitors from Yamba, the Gold Coast, Woolgoolga, Evans Head and Murwillumbah. Joel Power and Richard Parker came in with a scorching 48 points to win on a countback from visitors Stephen Hardwick and Mark Phillips. A dry February for Richard is certainly not hurting his game and the combination with young Joel, who smashes the ball, proved too strong. NTPs went to Gregor Simpson on the 2nd, Mark Hemmy the 7th, Richard Parker the 11th, Andre Dietiker the 17th, with the Thistle Hole NTP for two on the 9th, going to the consistent Mark Andrew, who took it out last week as well. Club balls went down to 42 points on a countback. New member Michael Endean will be checking the fuel in his buggy before teeing off next time. It’s a long walk back to the club from the 16th! Darrell Simmons can’t seem to win a ticket, six wipes in a row doesn’t help. It’s a cruel game Simmo. John Bloom had an interesting first hole. His 2nd shot hit a tree and the ball got lodged in the bark over a metre off the ground. His three iron, swung like a baseball bat did the trick punching it out and he still managed a seven. Well done. Captain Geoff Grayson reminds players of the Northern Rivers Mens Foursomes on Sunday March 6. There is a sheet on the board for interested players. Next Saturdays event is a Medley Stableford sponsored by the Club. Thistles Bistro continues to offer excellent meals at very reasonable prices so why not come along and enjoy the friendly atmosphere and take a punt on the raffles. Phil McGuire
