Former Maclean golfer Louis Brown has been inducted into the Professional Golfers Association of Australia [PGA] as a ‘Full vocational member of the PGA’, at the prestigious QLD Golf Industry Awards on March 21, at Jupiter’s Casino on the Gold Coast. His father David Brown said that from a young age, Louis has always had an interest in golf. “When Louis was about five or six we moved out of town, to near the Maclean Golf Club,” said Mr Brown. “I was a keen golfer and Louis would tag along with me. “He always had good eye/hand coordination, so I got a set of golf clubs cut down [to size] for him. Louis became a regular player at Maclean Golf course, where he played all his junior golf and started winning tournaments. Mr Brown said that during years 8 and 9, it was nothing for Louis to go and play 9 holes before school. “Louis was picked in the school golfing team which travelled to Sydney and Dubbo, where he competed at State junior level, against other schools. Louis went on to become the ‘North Coast School Boy Champion’. During one tournament back at his home club in Maclean, Louis not only took out the Junior Champion but also the Men’s Champion; there were only three players in NSW to have done this. This was an amazing feat for the young golfer who, to this day, has never had one professional golf lesson. After leaving school Louis took on a three year traineeship, at the Yamba Golf Club. During this time he juggled working a 38 hour week, assignments and playing in a minimum of 20 tournaments every year, for three years. Louis currently works as one of the golf pros at Ashgrove Golf Club in Brisbane, where he is a teaching pro golfer. Although he loves his job at the moment, Louis is keen to have a crack at the PGA tour overseas. He is already sponsored by two top golfing businesses, Wilson Staff and Fayde. In year seven, Louis wrote down his life goals – ‘to be a golf pro and to play in the British Open’. And, for this young fully qualified PGA golf professional, he’s already half way there.
