Long Way Home writing competition launched

It’s time for local writers to grow their stories, with the launch of The Long Way Home competition 2023.

Long Way Home co-director Claire Aman said the writing competition, now in its sixth year, invites Clarence Valley locals of all ages to write a story on the theme ‘Grow.’

“This year our artist Yohanna Dent suggested the Grow theme. We think it will resonate with people in an abundance of ways, from inner realms to wild places,” said Claire. “There’s no limit on ways to think about this idea.”

“We want stories from adults, and from primary and high school students. We’re looking for original stories that move us or surprise us, stories that make us curious about what happens next. We look for authentic voices – the most powerful stories have a touchstone of the writer’s own culture and experience, enlivened by imagination.”

“The competition grows more popular each year. We discovered some fabulous writing last year, especially from winners Maggie McDade, Nadia Smith and Evie Rae. We hope to unearth new talent this year.”

As with previous years, the best entries will be published in a book, ‘Stories from the Clarence Valley 2023, Grow’ to be released at the end of this year.

Claire said the project had been lucky last year to have support from the Bendigo Bank South Grafton Community Bank Branch, First National Real Estate Yamba and Clarence Valley Council.

The deadline for all stories is June 1. Adults’ stories have a 2,500-word limit, while high school and primary students have a 500-word and 150-word limit respectively. More details on how to enter the competition can be found on www.thelongwayhomestories.com.

Claire Aman will be talking about The Long Way Home project on Wednesday February 15 at the Grafton Regional Gallery at 10.30am (free event but book through Eventbrite).
