The Clarence River Jockey Club (CRJC) held their annual Kensei Club dinner and July Racing Carnival launch, on Saturday night at Grafton’s CRJC.

During the dinner, the running of the 13th Kensei Club Cup took place, to determine the naming rights for this year’s prestigious Grafton Cup. The luck of the Irish saw Gerry McMullan of G McMullan Contracting; take out the naming rights for the second year running.

In the fun filled event, Gerry once again donned the green jockey cap to see his green horse, first past the post.

Gerry’s wife Kathy said that it was great to be a part of something that is community based and to support the Kensei Club and the CRJC.

“It’s very exciting,” Cathy said.

“To win it one year was great; but to win it two years in a row is fantastic.

“You’ve got 10 wonderful sponsors (members of the Kensei Club who all have a chance at winning the naming rights for the Grafton Cup) that put in their all every year; and to be able to knock them off to win it again, is great.

“I can’t wait (for race week) and I look forward to it again this year,” she said.

Gerry said that they were taking after McKimm’s (Real Estate) who in the past, have also taken out the naming rights two years in a row.

“They (McKimm’s) just came up and congratulated us and welcomed us to the ‘two year club’, said Gerry.

“Winning the (Kensei Club Cup) event was simply, just all luck.

“It’s very good to win it two years in a row; it’s great.

“Here we go again – more expense and more clothes,” Gerry said laughing.
