Grafton men’s golf

A very strong field challenged the tough course conditions and suspect weather in last Saturdays Don Bellamy Memorial Day, sponsored by the family of the late Don Bellamy, Wendy, Jon and Mark Bellamy; our thanks to Jon for extending that sponsorship to post presentation drinks for all those present for the presentation of trophies.

The combination of Alf Groves (16) and Owen Hindmarsh (26) were the best of the 107 players in the Fourball competition with 47 points at the conclusion of their 18 holes. In second position were Graeme Smith (16) and Paul Langford (6) with 46 in a countback from Dwayne Doyle (19) and Bob Wicks (18). Claiming the 3rd runner-up, also with 46 were the team of Paul Ensby (17) and Craig Woods (11) following the three way countback that was required to sort out the runner-up positions.

Pro Pin honours went to Ralf Zaffino (13), his tee shot on the 1st finishing 370cm from the cup.

NTPs: Graeme Smith (16) – Advantage Hospitality & Clarence Valley Window Tinting 6th hole (191cm); The Hanks Kitchen 10th – Paul Langford (345cm); GJ Gardner Homes-Clarence Valley 17th – Graham Tracey (12) finished closest (114cm); McKimms Real Estate 4th and Ralfs Mechanical 14th were taken out by Peter Tracey (13) 173cm and John Dahl (8) respectively.  John’s second shot finishing a frustrating 18cm from the pin. Pro balls went down to all teams with 41pts or better.

Next weekend one of our more prestigious events for the year will be held which is the 36 hole Herron Cup, co-sponsored by Coca Cola Amatil and Tooheys. To qualify for the 36 hole Stroke event players must nominate for the entire two days prior to teeing off on Saturday. There is no point playing Saturday, producing a good round and then deciding to compete on the Sunday. Organisers will not permit that to happen. This particular event attracts golfers from all over NSW and Southern Queensland.

In last Tuesday’s member’s competition, Willow Harris (2) continued with his current outstanding golfing form, to claim victory with a well put together 39 points. Young Willow has proved to be almost unbeatable in recent weeks and without a doubt will remain at the top of his game in the forthcoming future.  Runner-up, also with 39 was John Tracey (7) from 2nd runner-up Clint Corbett (7) with 38 on a countback from Len Jones (21) and Graeme Smith (17).  Proballs went down to those golfers on 33 points.
