There was no doubting the winning combination in last Saturdays Bothamley O’Donohue Surveyors sponsored 4BBB event with Darryl Toms (7)& Bob Turns (21) accumulating a great score of 51pts to easily take out the competition A quick inspection of their score card reveals they had recorded 11 pars, 4 birdies, 2 bogeys and 1 double bogey, with each player scoring evenly on the card, featuring on 9 holes each. Before they went out to play, they were aware that they had to play well to win, as the leaders in the club house at that time had a score of 48pts which was a difficult target to achieve. However the Toms/Turns pairing went on to smash the entire field and thoroughly deserved their win with a display of some outstanding golf. The early leaders with the 48pts was the pairing of Peter (15) and Allen (24) Tracey who had every right to hope they would retain the lead. That was not to be, as they had to survive a countback to claim the runner up spot from Allen Hodge (24) and Billy Newman (15) who also finished on 48 points. They too would have expected to win with that score. One player who deserved a great amount of sympathy was Neville “12 marker”: Higham (18) who had to virtually endure and score on the entire 18 holes on his own scoring on 16 of the 18 holes. The only real contribution his playing partner made to his score of 41 points was he was the buggy driver. Neville’s score of 41 points should have rewarded with a Pro-Ball, however you needed a score of 43 points to earn that result. This is one occasion that it would be completely unjust for the handicapper to penalize Neville for his outstanding effort. Obviously Neville will be a little more careful when choosing a golf partner for any future 4 ball competitions. Next Saturday will be the September Monthly Mug, which will be the usual stroke format that applies to Mug Events. Coastal Golf Carts will be providing the trophies on offer for the overall winner, as well as the various grade winners. Progress continues in the 3 Knockout competitions currently under way. In the Clarence Valley Glass 2 person Ambrose knockout that series has reached to round 4 stage, which will need to be completed no later than 5th September. At this time the pairing of Athol Green and Ray Irving are the sole competitors to progress to this point, therefore the remainder of those competitors in this particular series have some catching up to do. Those players who remain in the T.G.I.F 4 ball Knockout still have a way to go to complete the 2nd round of this knockout which was required to be decided by 29th August. So far the only pairings who qualified for the 3rd round are the Michael Beehag/Darryl Duncanson combination as well as the Neil Hayward and John Dougherty pair. Players who have not completed their 2nd round matches are requested to do so without further delay as the 3rd round is to be finalised by 3rd October. The remaining knockout series, The Grafton Undercover Storage Singles Knockout also has a couple of outstanding matches to complete round 4 of the event, two players have already progressed to the quarter final stage, Neville Haywood and Michael Beehag, their opponents have yet to be determined. All Club members, both male and female are reminded of the working bee scheduled for 14th September and organised by our Club Professional Mark Harvison. The project will be the clearing of rocks and other debris on the 14th and 15th holes. This will not only benefit the regular members who play each week, but the successful completion of the project will also enhance the course for the up coming Pro-Am event. Volunteers will be required between the hours of 9 am until 12 noon and you will be rewarded for those efforts with a sausage sizzle lunch. All you need bring, is a little enthusiasm as well as gloves, bucket and an implement of some kind to extract and remove the rocks. For further details contact Mark Harvison. Ray Hopwood
