GDBC head to Urunga

The possibility of rain didn’t temper our enthusiasm as we travelled to Urunga for a wonderful weekend of dragon boat racing.

On Saturday, we combined paddlers from Clarence Coast and Deepwater for a heat of the 7.5km race and what a race it was. The final two kilometres saw our boat as one of three paddling abreast, each trying to surge to the lead to be the first to reach the corner and turn for the finish line. We paddled hard enough to beat our opponents, who were left in our wake. Coach Francine was very proud of our efforts.

Sunday saw us compete in a series of 200m races, and our coach for the day Marianne, kept each crew focused and ready to give their best. For Mandy and Karen, it was their first regatta and judging by their enthusiasm, they enjoyed it. We also welcomed Colleen back to paddling and she too was still smiling at the end of the day.

Thanks to Chrissy and Leanne who provided the delicious soups and desserts that sustained us after each day of competition.

If you’re wanting to combine fun and fitness on the water, then come and meet us to see what paddling is all about. You’ll find us at the rowing shed on Tuesday mornings at 5:45am and Thursday afternoons at 5:15 pm and at Corcoran Park on Saturday at 7:45am or find us on Facebook.
