Drivers urged to take care during double demerit period

Motorists are being reminded to take extra precautions while travelling on the roads as the 2023 Easter long weekend approaches.

Between April 6 and 10, double demerits will be enforced in NSW and the ACT, and will apply to speeding offences, illegal use of mobile phones, not wearing a seatbelt, or riding a motorbike without a helmet.

During the Easter long weekend in 2022, seven people tragically lost their lives on NSW roads, and more than 4500 drivers received fines.

Describing the 2022 Easter long weekend as a horrific period on the state’s roads, NSW Police are strongly urging travellers to drive carefully to help protect themselves, their loved ones, and other road users during one of the busiest times of the year.

Motorists are also being reminded that mobile phone detection cameras remain active in NSW and the ACT.

Drivers caught using their mobile phone during a double demerit period will incur a $352 fine and 10 demerit points.

  • Demerit points stay active on your licence for a three-year period, commencing from the date of the offence.
