Yamba women’s bowlers continue to play

Saturday March 14

Spectators were treated to excellent games in the semi-final of the Club Pairs played in pleasant conditions this morning. The team of Margaret Durante and Roz Moore prevailed over team Julie Coulter, Jane Pearson after Julie and Jane hit the accelerator and closed the gap a few ends before the finish line – but Margaret and Roz held on to win 18-15.

In the other game it was a nail biting conclusion when team Carol Ritale, Kerry Pedder also came within one point of team Helen Atkinson, Chris Cole on the final end. Kerry was holding shot till Chris’s last bowl came down and sat right in front of Kerry’s shot bowl to win the end and claim the game. Score – 17-16.

Great bowling from all contenders. The final, unfortunately, will be delayed until bowls and life returns to normal when Australia has shed itself of COVID-19.

Tuesday March 17

Another round of Queen of the Green this morning and what a game it was. Between two of our leading players Wendy Ballantyne and Julie Coulter it was always going to be a great match. Julie started the game with four shots on the first end and was off to a good start but Wendy hunkered down and by the 17th end lead by 12 shots. But Julie won the next couple of ends and increased her score to 16 while Wendy edged out to 23. It looked to be game and match to Wendy – but not so- Julie picked up another six shots in the next three ends and it was a nail-biting 23-22. With each of them winning a shot over the next two ends it was still anyone’s game. Last end – and Julie held the winning two shots when Wendy drew a ripper to take the game. Congratulations Wendy for retaining the Crown and congratulations Julie for an impressive effort. Marker – J. Pryor.

Great news from Grafton Services Club via our supporters – our team Helen Atkinson and Chris Cole have clinched the District Open Pairs. Congratulations all round.

COVID-19 has made substantial changes to our Association bowls (District, Pennant, Championships) for the present are to be put on hold. We can continue to play our social bowls but we must remain vigilant with all the requirements relating to personal hygiene. Our Club has taken great care to protect us from any contamination.

But please – don’t come to the Club if you feel at all unwell. It is essential that we do our part to stop spreading this insidious disease at all costs. Self isolate.
