On Sunday morning in perfect conditions for bowls and on a good running green, this years’ club premier event final of the Open Major Singles was played. With Doug Starr against the new District Champion Warren McDonald, the match was as expected a good exhibition of deft draw bowls with the occasional on shot. Doug got the better of the earlier ends and after five ends led 14-0. Warren then began to find his form and the honours were shared with each player scoring thirteen shots apiece in the next fifteen ends. Warren really made life difficult for Doug during the final nine ends, scoring nine shots to four. However, Doug’s earlier lead held him in good stead and on the twenty-ninth end he reached the required thirty-one shots for victory. Congratulations to Doug and a very well done to Warren who has had a very good bowling year. The first rounds of the Club Mixed Pairs have been set down for play this Saturday (June 4) for a 1pm start. The Club Minor Pairs nominations close this Friday June 3 at 5pm. The May round of the ‘Riverland Travel’ / ‘Travelling Cane Cutter’ bowlers was played last Friday. The leader Doug Starr (104) had a slight ‘hick-up’ which enabled the chasing pack to gain on him. The chasers had some shuffling in the pecking order also. Currently second is Stan McKenzie (79) followed by Trevor Govey (77) and Andy Lambie (67). A number of others are (50+). The June round will see the midway point of the event with some vouchers awarded to the then leaders. Lucky winners on the day were Athol Butcher, Michael Bailey & Trevor Govey. The sheet is on the board for entries to our first Tournament of the year the ‘John Kelly’ Triples on Saturday June 2. Already there are teams in. Only 26 teams can be accepted so be quick.
