Coles-gratulations to 50 years of loyal service

There have been many changes in the retail industry since Julie Layton commenced her employment in 1973.

But as she proudly celebrated 50 years working for her current employer Coles, on March 24, the few things that haven’t changed are her passion for her job, the life-long friendships she has made, and the ongoing support she receives from her team.

“I started working when it (Coles) was a variety store in Prince Street, Grafton,” she said.

“It didn’t sell any groceries, and we had a notepad and pencil, so anything we sold had to be added up manually because we didn’t have checkouts.

“When we eventually got checkouts, we had to type in the price and the item.

“There was no scanning.

“The store moved to its current location in Pound Street (Grafton Food Emporium) and opened on October 11, 1979.

“When we relocated only half the store was groceries, and we had a large general merchandise section and a large apparel section which sold absolutely everything.

“I’ve worked in many different roles through the years including the layby office, gardening section, toy section, and apparel, there’s been a lot of variety, and a lot of paperwork involved too.”

One of the biggest changes has been the introduction of the self-serve checkouts.

“It’s the progress of the industry,” she said.

“You’ve got to be prepared to change with the times, and that’s something I’ve definitely observed since I started working.

“I’ve always been lucky, I’ve always worked with good people, and they (Coles) have always been good to their team and provided opportunities for people to further their careers.

“I’ve always enjoyed the work I do, and I’m happy to continue doing it.”

Ms Layton currently works two half days each week on Mondays and Tuesdays and told the Clarence Valley Independent she has no immediate plans to retire after travelling overseas on multiple occasions during the past 10 years.

Current and former colleagues of Ms Layton will join her in celebrating 50 years working for Coles at a special lunch at the Jacaranda Hotel later this month.
