Winners Yamba ‘regatta’ 2022

Clarence Coast Dragons homage to Jacaranda

We were extremely disappointed when the Grafton Jacaranda regatta was cancelled due to recent flooding. However, CCDBC coaches were not going to let all that extra training go to waste, so they organised a surprise ‘simulation – regatta’ at our usual training venue on Yamba Bay.

In perfect weather conditions, and decked out in our jacaranda-coloured uniforms, the CCDBC team marshalled for events as if they were at the real Grafton regatta.

First event was a 5km paddle, which really challenged those paddlers who had never competed in a longer race. The relief when the hooter sounded to indicate the finish line was palpable. Of course, CCDBC placed first! The 200 metre sprints were next. Our mixed (male and female) 20s team performed exceptionally well, making a record time for this event. The men then lined the racetrack to cheer home the women’s 10s team who exceeded all expectations to charge home in a spectacular display of teamwork and athleticism.

At the medal presentation, the team manager praised the team spirit, willingness to embrace the ‘spirit of Jaca’ at our beautiful ‘home ground’ on the Clarence River, and the superb effort by coaches to prepare and train the team. Hopefully Grafton DB club will reschedule the regatta in the new year.

Dragon boating is a water sport enjoyed by women and men of all ages. CCDBC always welcomes new paddlers to come and enjoy exercising and social interaction with us on the beautiful Clarence River. If you are interested in trying dragon boat paddling, send us an email – clarencecoastdbclub@gmail.com . We paddle for one hour Wednesday 3.30pm and Saturday 7am.
