Clarence Valley woman Jennifer McKay officially launched an online petition last Thursday to have ‘Australia Day’ on January 26 changed to an alternative and inclusive date to celebrate the nation. Ms McKay said, “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders of this great south land grieve on January 26 as for them it is invasion day. I am asking Australians to respect the first people of this land and help me lobby the government, in particular our local Federal MP Kevin Hogan to change the current date of Australia Day to a day we can all celebrate as one. This year we mark 50 years since the 1967 referendum and it is time to take this next giant leap from just words to action”.
